KING OF THE HILL fans, chime in |
|
Here's my take on KOTH, aside from being a Texan myself:
The beauty of KOTH is that the basic premise and most of the episodes could have happened in real life, and probably already have - if not in Texas, then certainly somewhere else.
Hank Hill, propane dealer and erstwhile squire of the Texas town of Arlen, a star-crossed high school football hero married to a substitute Spanish teacher afflicted with both bad Spanish and a touch of narcissism, father to a middle-school boy who insists on dancing to the beat of his own drum. His best friends are a ne'er-do-well Army barber, an exterminator who's prone to conspiracy theories, and a ladies' man with a speaking style that confounds the uninitiated. In the course of his middle-class life, Hank Hill has wrestled with boondoggle bond measures, supported his niece's puppet show during the Super Bowl, tried his hand at competitive canine dancing, organized a comedy troupe to entertain propane dealers, and maintained an uneasy peace with his emotionally abusive father - a WWII vet who lost his shins (but not his nerve) to a Japanese machine gun in the South Pacific.
A shame that this is KOTH's last season, if you ask me.

1. I watch HOTH is re-runs |

The best part of the show is Peggy. I think she's the funniest, most interesting of the characters. I heard that ABC might pick the show up for another season but I'm guessing that's unlikely.

There are some episodes that are classics... who can forget Peggy bringing a little Mexican girl home, Dale's Porta-Gribble, and the guys becoming volunteer firemen! Good stuff!

that the show has always made me laugh for that reason alone.

I grew up in a pretty small town (roughly Arlen-sized, I suspect) in rural Illinois.
KOTH very accurately portrayed life in small-town America, and, most importantly, respected its characters. A lot of comedies like to look down their nose at the denizens of small towns and rural areas, but KOTH always portrayed the Hills et al. with a sense of respect and pride for folks who weren't on the cutting edge but just living life. In its heyday, it was always one of my favorite shows on TV. It's going to leave an interesting document of American life for posterity.
That said, I do think it's time has come. The last couple of seasons have seemed to have experienced a bit of a drop off in quality.

9. I used to love King of the Hill |
|
but it jumped the shark a couple years ago, if you ask me. The plots are convoluted, the jokes seem forced, and there are too many needless montages. That said, I still watch the old stuff.

25. I liked the recent take on Arlen's version of the Boy Scouts |
|
Namely, the devoted but way-too-overprotective dad who sought to purge the Order of the Straight Arrow of any possible hazards to kids, whereas Hank said that having danger around taught him and his friends that there are things in this world that are "sharp and hot." Classic!

Of a slightly less conservative than he thinks Texan. It treated all of its characters, even the oddball Dale, with a great degree of heart. Mike Judd is a great writer.

He's turning into a real-life Hank Hill. Played football in high school, takes good care of his lawn, has a big ol' pickup truck, enjoyed fishing his entire life, taught my brother and I how to shoot when we were kids, etc. He's retired now along with my mom.
