I haven't tried either myself, but I have dabbled in some pretty close pharmaceutical equivalents, and yeah, I can see why people get so hopelessly addicted to these things. An opiate high is the equivalent of slipping into a warm bath over and over again, that first blissful moment repeated for hours...

due to my morphine allergy--it's the next best thing that I'm not allergic to. I've had it post-surgery, and also for kidney stone attacks. I actually don't like it much, for several reasons.

1. They have to give me a shot of Phenargan or some other anti-nausea medication first, or else I projectile vomit the moment that stuff hits my veins.

2. When they're pushing the shot, no matter how slow they go, that stuff STILL kicks me in the stomach like an angry horse. It seriously feels like a punch to the gut. Not a pleasant experience.

3. Once it's working and the initial "punch" has faded, it's fine, but it wears off FAST. When I was in the hospital with my swollen, infected gallbladder, they had to give it to me every four hours, with Percocet in between to catch the breakthrough pain. Let me just say that, after a MONTH of that, then another TWO months of post-surgical pain treated with Dilaudid pills and Percocet, the withdrawal was an absolute nightmare.

Which brings me to number (4)--the Withdrawal after you've been on it for a while.

My docs did everything right--the gradual decrease in dosage, telling me to take them less and less often, but when I was finally down to half a Percocet every four hours and it was time to stop completely, I felt worse than I'd ever felt before in my life. I remember sweating a lot, and feeling oddly cold inside at the same time. My skin felt cold and ultra-sensitive, like someone was pouring buckets of ice water over me, and my entire body ached like I had the worst case of the flu EVER. It was awful. Every minute just CRAWLED by. I couldn't sleep worth a damn. My digestive system went berserk. Half of that was due to the post-surgery adjustment of having no gallbladder, and the other half was because my guts had become sluggish and slow, and were suddenly (and painfully) waking up and going into overdrive. I cried all the way through it.

I hope to god that I never have to feel that again. I understand completely why heroin users are addicts, and I don't think it's about getting "high" after a while, because I know from experience that after the first week or two of taking strong narcotics regularly, you really don't feel "high" anymore. I think addicts are just using in order to avoid the pure torture of the withdrawal.
