The Crummy Stuff Thread
Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 12:55 AM by Jamastiene
Post stuff here that you think is crummy. I'm hoping it'll be therapeutic in some way for us all to dump it here.

Crummy music?
Crummy TV?
Crummy people?
Crummy movies?
Crummy facts of life?
Crummy anything?

For me,

Crummy music?
That late 90s Nu Metal crap. Geez, either do metal or do rap, but not both at the same time. :puke:

Crummy TV?
Most of the reality stuff has gotten stale. One or two good reality shows were great, but don't take over the entire lineup every night of the week now. Gah.

Crummy people?
Homophobic people, racists, neo-Nazis, sexists, and of course, Republicans.

Crummy movies?
I just don't like romance movies unless they are dysfunctional. I don't know why.

I also don't like shitty excuses for comedy. Examples:
Good Comedy: Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Monty Python
Bad Comedy: For God's sake, keep me away from any of the Wilson brothers and the stupid Afleck brothers. Also, Dumb and Dumber wasn't funny the first time. Next!

Crummy facts of life?
Women are complex mythical creatures that perplex my mind to the point of drinking heavily. I just haven't figured out where the hate, that so many of them feel for me, comes from.

Crummy anything?
Mental Illness. I'm not talking about the people with mental illness, but the mental illnesses themselves. I wish to God there was a way we could eradicate mental illness without eradicating the people who are suffering. There are many good people underneath all the heartache, pain, and misery.

So, what's your Crummy Stuff list?

6. Interesting thread.
Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 11:58 PM by ghostsofgiants
Crummy music?
Post-grunge. I'm not huge on grunge in the first place, but the slick, corporate, angst-ridden wailing of Scott Stapp, Chad Kroeger and their imitators and predecessors (Seven Mary Three anyone?) is horrendous.

Crummy TV?
Reality TV. Seriously, lowest common denominator horeshit at its laziest. At least crap like The OC and Sex and the City had a creative drive behind them, in some (admittedly quite shallow) respect.

Crummy people?
Homophobes. People who take their dead-end jobs really seriously. Fratboy jock types tend to be pretty crummy in my experience. People who have an irrational aversion to science (ie. global warming deniers and creationists).

Crummy movies?
Twilight. Based on a book by a writer who herself had never seen an entire vampire film. Fuck that.

Crummy facts of life?
People are idiots. Even smart people are fucking idiots.

Crummy anything?
The fact that I have had the entire first run of The Twilight Zone downloading for two weeks now and it is still not finished. (Though it is at 96% so hopefully another day or two and it will be done.)

10. Crummy music. Crummy movies.
Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 02:15 AM by Manifestor_of_Light
Crummy: Anything in country music by the whiners. Depressing shit.

Good country music: Chet Atkins, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Roy Clark. That's about it.

Crummy music: Harry Connick Jr., Stray Cats (recycled big band), Kenny G (noodling, but it's NOT jazz and it's NOT improvising); Yawni, Andre Rieu and all the other fluff on public TV.

More crummy music: New Age wallpaper music that camps on D major for twenty minutes. Also Philip Glass and his repetitive career.

I'm trained in classical music and hate three-chord stuff. I think Beethoven (except for Sym. #6, #7 and #8), and Vivaldi and Handel are pretty much overrated.

Crummy movies: Horror films, vampire/slasher films, violent films with no plot (cf. The Dark Knight); violent films that I have completely forgotten because they were stupid: Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs; films with lots of violence against women (I can't list 'em all); sci-fi films; chick flicks that are full of airhead women who love to shop; other stuff I can't remember. I cannot care for films where there is lots of violence, which solves nothing. I can't care for comic book characters. I can't identify with the characters. They also are totally masculine and have no female characters or else the women are very minor (cf. The Dark Knight). This indicates that only men are important; women don't do important things.

I don't like films that substitute violence or technology (sci-fi)for emotional connections between characters. I think they are made (and watched) by males who are afraid of emotions and afraid of women. They scorn women because they think women are "not rational". Pretty immature. I've known those guys. They ignore women and wonder why they never have a date. A lot of movies are made by overgrown boys (cf. George Lucas). At least Spielberg deals with emotions (ET, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List).

The last few GOOD movies I saw: Milk, Hancock, Defiance, Kinsey, The Keeper, Harry Potter series.

I also like silly movies: Monty Python, National Lampoon, Borat, Help!, Blazing Saddles.

(donning flame suit)

11. Crummy TV:
Virtually everything on. If we didn't get free cable, I wouldn't pay for it.

There are two shows I watch, and they are both available online. If I couldn't watch them, I would be sad for, like, 5 minutes, and then I would be over it. :P

14. That's not even the part that bugs me
Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 03:05 AM by XemaSab
The part that bugs me is NO MATTER WHAT TIME OF DAY OR NIGHT there's the same shit on:

Bull riding. House, which I've seen ALL the episodes of. Walker. Jesus. Teh Redding channel. HGTV. Weather. Bullshit "news." Depressing shit on Animal Planet. Home shopping. Spanish TV. Lawrence Welk. Movies I've never heard of. Food. Travel to random places I don't care to go to. Nuns. Andy Griffeth. Lameass shows on channels that used to be cool. Awards ceremonies. Reality shit.

Night after night after night.

Seriously, the last three nights in a row I have checked the TV listings, and the best thing on was the back half of "American Beauty," which I have seen 4 times.

And on edit: I have watched bull riding 4 days out of the last week. x(

15. Yeah, this sounds familiar.
Find something else to do, maybe?

Like use the Spanish stuff to learn Spanish?

Or read a book?

12. Crummy ideas.
The idea that anyone can get "ahead" in life by working hard.

The idea that working "hard" equates to success.

The idea that some boss will reward you someday by promoting you.

The idea that working at a job you hate is admirable (yes I know we all have to make decisions).

The idea that ruining your health by working too much is somehow admirable.

The idea that success is defined by having a nicer car or a bigger house than other people.

Good idea: The consumer economy is crumbling. People are learning that they don't have to shop all the time.

Crummy ideas con'td:
The idea that you should care about what other people think (see definition of success).

The idea that if you cannot get a job, it's your own fault, and not the fault of the people who own everything who have deliberately destroyed our economy.

The idea that if you have a problem or illness, it's your own fault.

The idea that authority figures have any more answers than you do (minister, teacher, newscaster, TV pundit, politician, parent, boss). Also, that anyone should let other people control their thinking or their lives. The idea that answers are outside yourself.

The idea that we should all live in fear, because the media promote fear (latest killer disease! latest catastrophic weather! terrorists hiding under our beds! out of control kids!).

The idea that all life situations are solved by black and white thinking.

The idea that problems are solved by violence.

The idea that we should conform to the majority of peoples' opinions and attitudes. (I don't mean that we should break the law or offend others. I'm talking about personal preferences that harm no one.)

The idea that buying stuff leads to happiness and fulfillment.

The idea that all your problems can be solved by buying particular products (see Edward Bernays, and The Century of the Self for more info).

The idea that people of a different ethnic group, language, or class are automatically threatening to your well being.

The idea that it's better to wave a flag and fund armies than it is to spend our money on people and ideas that need nurturing (see: Military Industrial Complex).

The idea that white people "discovered" North America and "settled" it.

The idea that men are more important than women or children, in all cultures, and that rich white men must be noticed, due to their "specialness".

The idea that all feminists hate men.

I could go on......

16. Good morning to you too!
Crummy music "New Country" of the '90's. I liked some of the OLD country - I like any music that features well-played guitar and a beat, even 2/4 - byt the "new wave" and much of today's slickey stuff is soulless garbage.

TV: I have a dish, and weekends are a total loss for some reason - I covered every channel from 3 to 400 yesterday found NOTHING I wanted to see. Forced to READ! I mean, this is the 21st century, come on....READ?

People- I just emailed Rachel M. that whenever I see a GOPer on her program or anywhere on TV, I change the channel. I don't let Republicans in my home, even on TV. They suck.

Movies-Maybe I like 5 movies a year, some years not even that. I like good, smart movies, and there ain't that many.

Comedy: Liked Larry Black's standup, hated his weekly show.

Life: Min things I hated-Bad teeth, having diabetes, working for fascist pricks who love power.

Health care-the non-system-exists to make the rich richer for as little effort as possible.

mark
