155. There is a place in Creel where you can rent toyota or nissan 4 door 4x's
or you can take the bus (van) or hitch a ride like the Raramuri do. I guess people mountain bike too (YIKES) but really I saw passenger cars on the road - it is better than my ranch roads! (except for the dust where they were working - powder) Most any vehicle can make it I think, but then I have odd standards so take that how you will - in Batopilas the streets are narrow - but i did them with a 15 passenger van and saw a huge truck do some maneuvers in town - that was amazing.)

Some rugged, remote, beautiful country - but go soon. The state of Chihuahua is doing a lot of infrastructure work - there is electricity everywhere now and lots and lots of paving. When I drove that road in April last year they were doing a lot of road work the first 12 miles in - I wonder if it will be paved soon? My friends took El Chepe from the coast up and also went down to Urique.

I can't wait to go back - maybe next fall!

There was even a program to get college credits for attending. I would totally do it again! It was probably the most fun I ever had. I was even on a "video team" where they followed us with a camera and documented the whole experience. It cost extra, but I can watch the video memories any time I want. :)

How about DUers go to Space Camp? Maybe we could get a group rate! :bounce:

35. it was on a navy ship permanently homeported over there.
the admiral who commanded the "Middle East Force" lived and worked from this ship. it was essentially his floating office. a tour of duty on it was for only one year because of the shaky location. it considered "arduous duty". I took this duty to get the hell out of Norfolk, VA and it was one of only a few ways to do that (long story). I also lived in Meridian, Mississippi for a few months while in the navy. :scared: :hi:

The doctor said about 60-70% of copperhead bites are "dry," ie not enough venom to kill or hurt someone. The wound/fang marks became inflamed and itched-hurt like a bad sunburn.

36. Went up the Amazon River on an onion boat
Along the way, a baby died, and the two boys - also college students - that I was traveling with built the baby's coffin. The next day, we all went into the jungle and buried him. He was two months old.

I have successfully taken small children away from their abusive parents.

I once stopped traffic on I-395 outside Washington, DC at night when I realized a man had had a seizure behind the wheel of his car and couldn't drive, couldn't communicate. Everyone stopped and waited until the men I dragged from their cars to help pushed his car off to the shoulder, and then we waited for the ambulance together. He was all right.

I just found a whole bunch of my memorabilia, and I'm starting to scan it. I'm hoping to start a page for our cast. That's great you found so many people, that's encouraging! My first roommates when i moved out of my parents' house has been castmates (Frank and Magenta).

58. studied/gave oral report on taxidermy (11yo/6th grade)
Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 09:05 PM by sohndrsmith
I was told after I gave my report that many of the boys (one of which I am not) were looking nauseous as heard the descriptions of the process.... (hee).

Not sure what is or is not unusual, but I have a few more that may or may not qualify:

I also:

-- shot a perfect bull's-eye with a .45 revolver (age 8). Inherited the weapon 3 yrs later (age 11), but wasn't given to me then, wisely. Target practice wasn't fun (or as safe) without Grandpa...

-- went to Easter Mass with my friend and her family, one of whom was mafia boss "Fat Tony" Salerno (age 11/12).

-- caught on fire - stood too close to the fireplace in my non-fire-retardant nightgown... screen wasn't up (age 13/14).

Okay I'll stop now. You only asked for one and I don't know if this is the sort of thing you are asking for. : )
EDITED: deleted one.

The "hideously drunk on 151-proof rum and cherry Kool-Aid" - I thought I had ruptured internal organs when I was throwing up, the cherry kool aid effect. I thought I was dying and I promised god that if he let me live I would never drink again. I was good to my word as I have never again mixed rum and kool aid.

I was 19 and my friend and me needed some plywood in a pinch to repair a botched job on a garage wall. His truck was plowed in.. Long story short, we tied 2 sheets to the roof with rope that wrapped around through the car windows. Plywood was secure....wind gust during a snowstorm and the next thing you know we were airborne. We estimated about 4 feet off the ground and maybe 10 feet forward.

I flew a Toyota Tercel !

165. Watched dolphins use a computer
equipped with a specially made touch screen. They use their rostrums (beaks) to point to one of the four quadrants of the screen, sort of like giant icons. This was at Sea Life Park on O'ahu, where a research project was going on after park hours.

The killer app in the dolphin world? Video of other dolphins. The park rotated its dolphins back and forth to a pool at a fancy hotel in town for a little R&R. So the ones in the tanks would use the computer to watch video of their friends across the island. Who knows what would have happened if IM had been around at the time?

Had to learn how to put all the gear on them, hitch them up to the wagon and drive them around the farm. I volunteered at a working turn of the 19th century farm when they still did that at Armand Bayou Nature Center (for those in the Houston area.)

It was fun :D

183. Walked through a mine field - several times
While working in the Negev desert on a moshav, growing tomatoes and melons, I'd walk out to some bushes for a bit of privacy while irrigating the desert...so to speak. One day, the Israeli army came along and fenced off the area, with signs saying DANGER:MINES.

*Our US tax dollars supplied them with plastic mines (detector proof). During a rare rain deluge, they floated all over the place.
