Well here it is, my official college admission decisions thread
I remember beginning to think about which schools I was going to apply to about two year ago. At the time I told myself and everyone that I would apply to no more than 7, and preferably about 5. As the time to apply crept closer and closer the neurotic worrying and stress that many students suffer began to sink in and my list of schools grew. I ended up applying to 10 schools. Today I heard from another school, completing the admission process for me. I'm absolutely thrilled and honored with the results of my late night essay writing, and I'm certain that my Mom is glad that the process is over and I can now stop with the constant rushing to check the mail and refreshing my email inbox. ;)

Below is a list of the schools I applied to and the admission decisions I received. Yes, I'm saving the announcement of the school I'll be attending until the very end of this post. It's more fun that way! :P

NYU - Accepted
UCLA - Accepted
Berkeley - Accepted
Harvard - Wait-listed
UNC Wilmington - Accepted
Pratt Institute - Accepted
Boston University - Accepted
Ithaca College - Accepted
Alabama - Accepted
UT Austin - Rejected (I now have an excellent reason to pull against UT's football team ;) )

And now for the best part. I'm absolutely thrilled and honored to announce that I'll be attending what has long my dream school and top choice, NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where I will be majoring in film & television. I have also been admitted as a Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholar. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars major in one of the eight undergraduate divisions at NYU. In addition, they participate in a rich combination of seminars, domestic and international travel colloquia, research, educational and cultural activities, and community service. Scholarships and grants make the school affordable for me, and the film program is the best out there. After visiting the campus, and talking with current students and faculty I am certain the NYU is the place for me. I loved the campus, loved the students, loved the faculty, loved everything about it! I felt at home at NYU and I'm happy and excited to have finally found a place that I know will be perfect for me! I look forward to the fall. I can't wait to attend NYU and continue growing as a filmmaker and as a person.

New York DU'ers, can't wait to be your neighbor! ;)

75. Hey Ya'll Don't Diss Wilmington NC
it's a great place with awesome beaches and year-round nice weather, as well as quite a few nice people, lots of artists, a thriving gay community and an excellent place to be in the filmmaking industry. As Ava said, it is one of the top spots in the U.S. for movies and filmmaking.

Next time you're on I-95 and bored, come down I-40 and check out our beaches, especially our southern facing beaches between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach (Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach).

68. This probably has to do with their 10% rule.
The top 10% of students in Texas high schools are guaranteed admission to UT and Texas A&M (but this also includes all of their branches and other state schools as well- at least I think that's how it works)., which is a LOT of students if you think about it. Which I think is okay but it also means they reject many otherwise worthy out of state students.

It likely has very little to do with Ava's qualifications.

Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 10:32 PM by Lethe
top 10% rule is completely unbalanced.

to make the top 10% at a blue ribbon high school, you have to take almost 100% AP courses, etc, and compete with top students in the nation who do nothing but study

contrast that with your average small town high school, where if you are reasonable intelligent and apply yourself you can make the top 10% easily with little effort

Have a great time at NYU! :)

However, I suspect I know why you got rejected by UT. There is a state law in Texas guaranteeing admittance to graduates in the top 10% of their high school classes. One of the results is that it is more difficult for out of staters to gain admittance.

52. Well, the law has noble intentions.
It was designed to get more students from areas other than the suburbs. So, someone coming from Harlingen has the same chance as someone from Spring. But the law as written doesn't work well.

We are all so proud of you, Ava! You are an amazing young woman, it's been a pleasure to hear about your pre-college activities, and NYU should be thrilled to have you. I'm glad to hear about your choices.

Also a great way to live in a wonderful part of NYC!

63. Texas wasn't your fault. They are hard on non-resident applicants.
They have to accept applicants who graduated in the top 10% of their class at in-state high schools. That was the state's attempt to get around an Affirmative Action acceptance policy. Because of that, UT and A&M fill up with under-educated products of the lousy school system here and run out of room for exceptional students from other areas.

Sorry you won't get to hang out in Austin, but honestly, I'd have gone to NYU over Texas, too. :) Congo-Rats!

I'm sorry that Harvard didn't accept you with open arms. They don't know what they're missing. Really! They should have accepted you, and I know that was your first choice. If get a chance to transfer there, then transfer! But for at least a little while we'll be very happy to have you here. :)

85. harvard wasn't really my first choice honestly.. their financial aid program appealed to me though
NYU is my top choice. it always was my top choice, but my fear was that i would not be able to afford the school. harvard has a financial aid program that is very generous, so i thought if i got into the school it would be ironically more affordable. thanks to the scholarships and grants i received from NYU i can now afford it, and i'm absolutely thrilled! NYU is the best film school out there!

87. Congrats! Fantabulous! NYC, the Village, you'll love it
The thing about NYC that most people from out of the area don't understand is that there is ALWAYS something interesting to see or do at any time of the day or night. It's an education in and of itself.

Good luck to you Ava. I hope this doesn't mean the end of your online videos but if you are too busy we'll understand.

I'm looking into their NPO Certificate program taught in conjuction with TANO. I ended up getting a scholarship to St. Ed's, but I'm still a little miffed at UT.

104. Awesome. That is the scariest thing, applying to a school for the arts.
Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 10:38 PM by Mike 03
I remember applying to only two schools, and one was just a fallback: I was either going to get into the USC film school or die trying... And my fallback was industrial design at another college (U.C. Davis). There was nothing in between.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!! It takes some guts and confidence to go for that and get it.

That is awesome, fantastic, and every other hyperbolic adjective I can think of.

105. One of my coworkers is trying to decide which school to go for.
She started working out a 'pro and con' sheet when we weren't busy at work yesterday... one school ended up with a gigantic list of pros and the only con was that it was far away from home. Every other school had two or three in each category. :P

109. Ava...
My nephew is graduating from NYU in May with a degree in Political Science. He's returning in the fall to pursue a Masters. He loves the school. Has made some great friends and acquired a girlfriend.

He's from Southern Cal so it was quite an adjustment, but he wouldn't have changed a thing.

Congratulations on being accepted to a bunch of great schools. You should be very proud of your accomplishments!
