49. Actually, they can do that on a pretty simple level.
Over the years, I've seen a number of graphs in the kindergarten rooms at the school where I teach.

Think of it this way...the teacher asks the kids how many of them are wearing red. They figure it out, and the teacher puts an appropriate number of little red shirt cut-outs in a line on a board next to the word "red", with corresponding numbers underneath. The teacher then does the same thing with a few other colors, putting each new color in a separate line above or below the previous one next to the appropriate color. Boom, you've got a simple "bar" graph the kids can understand and get information from. I suspect that's all they're talking about. It's really more of an extention of counting (and colors, or whatever else you might want to use) than proper graph utilization. :)

50. I failed kindergarten...
seriously, they placed me into "Transition" between 1st and 2nd grades because I was "holding back the other students"...which was ridiculous. I knew my phone number, how to read, my ABCs, how to not poop my pants and I had a wicked sense of humor. I was also very uninterested in the other kids or participating in my class. So...I'd not participate...then go home and read The Hobbit.

Geniuses fail Kindergarten.

I seemed to remember all you could get in Kindergarten were a check, check plus, and a plus.

Are you sure the teacher isn't actually a product of Stalin Education?

Childish, but it sure as hell made me smile :P

36. I was told that a lot in school. Now I sell paintings professionally.
His art teacher is probably a failed artist, taking her/his frustrations at failing to live the Bohemian dream outon the kids.

Perhaps he/she had thoughts of going to school for art, and then was told in college, "Sorry - you aren't quite professional artist caliber, you have no creativity or vision; probably best if you just teach art to children. Crafts and technical uninspired work seem to be your things".

38. Heh heh.
Best evidence yet that he's on the right track.

My nephew drew a pic in kindergarten of his mom sunning herself, only he left her top off, so teacher got a pic of a lying down, broad-smiling stick woman with arms outstretched and two HUMONGOUS bare boobs.

Teacher wrote wryly at the top, "This one's a keeper!"

...But the worst part is that it was apparently forwarded to the office, too. At the top was also a note and big smiley face from the (male) PRINCIPAL, saying, "Nice work!!!"

My brother stashed it away before my sis-in-law could destroy it. He figures she'll appreciate it later...

42. send her a copy of this:
Flowers are Red
by Harry Chapin

The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw
And the teacher said.. What you doin' young man
I'm paintin' flowers he said
She said... It's not the time for art young man
And anyway flowers are green and red
There's a time for everything young man
And a way it should be done
You've got to show concern for everyone else
For you're not the only one

And she said...
Flowers are red young man
Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen

But the little boy said...
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one

Well the teacher said.. You're sassy
There's ways that things should be
And you'll paint flowers the way they are
So repeat after me.....

And she said...
Flowers are red young man
Green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than they way they always have been seen

But the little boy said...
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and I see every one

The teacher put him in a corner
She said.. It's for your own good..
And you won't come out 'til you get it right
And are responding like you should
Well finally he got lonely
Frightened thoughts filled his head
And he went up to the teacher
And this is what he said.. and he said

Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen

Time went by like it always does
And they moved to another town
And the little boy went to another school
And this is what he found
The teacher there was smilin'
She said...Painting should be fun
And there are so many colors in a flower
So let's use every one

But that little boy painted flowers
In neat rows of green and red
And when the teacher asked him why
This is what he said.. and he said

Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There's no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen.

44. Did you check with the teacher as to why s/he graded him that way?
Everyone is so quick to make assumptions here.... without knowing both sides.

For one thing -- does the report card come with those standardized comments, or did the teacher personally write the comment as you quoted it?

I got a nasty phone call from a parent who didn't appreciate the comment I checked off. However, it was pre-worded and the only option that fit the situation. Our "report cards" are all in the computer. We don't get any leeway for individualized comments. Maybe this was the case?

It is always best to go to the source. Call the teacher. Find out where the problem is, before jumping to conclusions about the teacher's skills and professional judgment.

What do you have to know when you're that age? Draw a picture, do something that you want to do, make a squiggle if you feel like it! Since when do little kids need to understand "key concepts and skills" of art? Art is friggin' subjective!!! ANYTHING can be art!!!

46. This is (some of what) we teach in kindergarten art:
Elements and principles of design (value, balance, variety, etc.)
The color wheel
Primary and secondary colors
Warm and cool colors
Shapes
Types of lines
Basic drawing skills
Basic perspective
Proportions of the face and body
Manipulative skills like cutting, gluing, and assembling
Self-portraits
Patterns
Symmetry - simple and radial
Neatness, following directions
Responsibility
Cooperation and teamwork
Proper use of materials
Safety with materials
Some art history and appreciation, including multi-cultural art projects
And of course, self-expression and creative thinking.

I could probably think of more if I wasn't so tired from teaching elementary art all day. The curriculum is probably much different than many of you remember from your school days. We follow national and state standards in all subject areas, including kindergarten art.

I don't think anyone cares, but I just had to stick up for teachers here.
