Poll question: Comma question: which of these is correct? |
|
I'm inclined toward the latter, but I'm having trouble locating an online source to back it up for certain. Several sites indicate that a comma should offset a "mild interjection" from the rest of sentence ("Yes, they do.") but I can't seem to find a ruling for this sort of double-interjection.
If you can provide an actual citation, I'd be most appreciative. Failing that, please give some indication of your reasoning one way or the other.
Thanks!

6. Casually, I'd agree with that, but... |
|
A whole string of profs cautioned against overuse of exclamation points (or "screamers," as several called them).
As I'd be using it, the line is spoken in a rather subdued manner, so an exclamation point wouldn't quite fit the tone.
Thanks for chiming in, though.

5. Thank you--that's just the sort of citation I needed. |
|
I could sort of justify it to myself with either formulation, but I'm pleased to revise my thinking.
Thanks again! Note the in-text use of the exclamation point as a means of amplifying my appreciation.

"Hell yes," he said.
I'm not sure how it would work being hollered.
"Hells yea!" he said.
I'm guessing that the thought otherwise stems from something like...
Exclamation! Words being exclaimed.
Shit! I stubbed my toe.
