some people are just cranky.
In re: your question - no, not really. I thought the actor (and I use the term loosely) who played Anakin was one of the worst I've EVER seen. The plot didn't hold together well, and the dialogue was well, bad. Sorry.
But - hey! Welcome to DU anyways! :hi:

But I was thirteen years old. I still think the Prequels are superior to "New Hope" and "Return of the Jedi."

My favorite remains "A New Hope", because I'm all about the big dogfight in the end.
"Revenge..." I thought was the best of the prequels, but that's not saying much. I just find the actor who plays Anakin terrible. Also, from a writing standpoint, it seems Lucas really wanted me to like Anakin, but because he he's always whining about how the council is holding him back, I end up hating him. And his turn to the dark side was too out of the blue and for no good reason.
To me Darth Vader was a great villain because he was such a heartless bastard. I have a hard time reconciling the two characterizations. YMMV of course.

Vader became heartless upon hearing about the death of his beloved Padme. At the beginning of A New Hope, Ben Kenobi says something about him being more machine than man now...
I agree that A New Hope was the best movie, though I liked Empire a lot as well.
I think RotS is better than Return of the Jedi.

I agree with your ranking of the movies.
But I do think Anakin should have struggled with his turning evil more. He was still all human when he agreed to go off and slaughter everyone in the temple the trade federation guys, just so *maybe* he could save Padme. Guess he's not much of a big picture person.
So it all kinda fell flat for me. I was more affected by Ayla Secura's death (obscure Jedi reference :P) than by Anakin's histrionics in the end. Maybe a better actor could have pulled it off...
Padme had a great line though: "So this is how democracy ends... with thunderous applause"

I agree - he was fighting the Sith & Count Dooku, and even goes to turn the Emperor in to the Jedi Council... then, he suddenly kills Mace Windu and then starts killing children? WTF? It was too quick. (I brought that up to a Star Wars geek and he had replied that there was a lot more in the book... which may be true, but it was not in the movie)
Is Ayla Secura one of the "Tailheads" - I think she showed her being killed when the Jedi were cut down, right? I use tailhead because one of the clones calls them that in one of the cartoon episodes.

|
but, that is not a high bar to clear.
There were some excellent parts in RotS - I thought the betrayal of the Jedi was very well done with the "Execute Order 66" scene. And, the final lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin was one of the best extended scenes of all six movies. However, it was sandwiched between Padme whining, "you're going down a path I can't follow!" and the end with Anakin shrieking, "I hate you," at Obi-Wan, just two god-awful pieces of writing. I liked the duel between Grievous & Obi-Wan as well.

The words creaked plenty, but Lucas managed to reestablish himself as one of cinema's preeminent visual storytellers.
My grading:
The Empire Strikes Back (A+) Revenge of the Sith (A-) A New Hope (A-) The Phantom Menace (B) Attack of the Clones (C+) Return of the Jedi (C-)

|
People whine about the prequels, but at least those movies brought something new to the table (e.g., Byzantine design, geopolitical flourishes). What was ROTJ, but a stale retread? Cantina sequence extended into Jabba's 30-minute muppet show? Death Star II? Lazy.
And don't get me started about Vader's absurd, sentimentalist redemption. A crock of shit.

Except for the acting, but that's Lucas' fault, and not the actors' faults at all.
Except for Ian McDiarmid, who for some reason Lucas allowed to act in a real way, not in a stupid 190s serial kind o way. He totally makes the film.
Because of Lucas' shitty writing, hamfisted dialogue, and utterly artless directing, the only character I really cared about and had any interest in was Palpatine. And somewhat Obi Wan Kenobi.
But that ending!!!!!! Holy fucking gods of the universe, did Lucas really mean to set us up with 8 hours of storyline, just so he could end it with that totally fucking inappropriate, artless, cliche, trite, miserable, deplorable "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"?
Fucking hell.

However, it was not trying to tell an epic love story during the movie, either, like Episodes 2 & 3. The interaction between Anakin & Padme was almost painful to watch at times it was so bad.

Ep I is complete garbage. Ep II has some of the worst-directed love scenes I've EVER seen.
III, I can deal with it. Though I thought Hayden was terrible, it wasn't any worse than the second film, and a lot of other factors were better.
Although there is one line that drove me to laughter in the theater... "NOOOOOOOO!" The whole theater cracked up; kind of messed up the end, when it was supposed to be dark and poignant

favorite "Star Wars" movies.
For what it's worth, I think the Prequels are all extremely under-rated, and that people who favor the first three movies are being overly sentimental, because the Prequels are much more sophisticated and political. There is some bad (no, terrible) acting there, but I try to ignore it.

Most people dislike the prequels because they are pieces of shit some of the WORST acting and dialogue I have seen in any movie.Natalie Portman horrible...You could never pay me enough to watch Hayden Christianson do anything and Jar Jar Binks is the most annoying character EVER and is racist to boot. Epi 3 is the only one watchable.lLucas RUINED the Stat Wars franchise with the prequels I am a hard core SciFi fan and I have never met anyone who thought Epi one and two are anything but junk.

40. Well, I love to discuss this, but your post is a bit of a rant |
|
and I agree with a lot of it.
Portman is HORRIBLE. You are right.
Christianson is lame.
Lucas cannot direct human beings to act.
I wish your argument were a bit more coherent, so that there was some way to dispute it point by point, but beyond the first obvious two, I can't.

The script was horrible. There was essentially no plot. The performances were atrocious (actors were fine, so the direction must have been bad). The editing and pacing sucked. The special effects were run of the mill and atrocious. The "characters" acted out of character (R2-D2 flying around shooting bad guys?). The settings were lame (Darth Vader's all fucked up because he fell in lava? What 7-year-old thought that up?)
There is absolutely nothing rewarding about that movie.
And don't get me started on that Indiana Jones shit.
