For Serious! Who the fuck signed Sugar Ray?
Here's the scenario earlier today. I was stuck in a coworkers car going to a meeting across town. I didn't have control of the radio which doesn't necessarily bum me out because I'm not a control freak. But then I Just Want To Fly, or Please Fucking Kill Me Now (as I know it), from Sugar Ray came on the radio. I expected my coworker friend driving to turn the channel because I assumed she had some amount of taste.

WRONG!!!

She just starts humming along. Man, if only she knew how much her stock dropped in those few seconds. So instead of concentrating on the song (and my newly de-friended coworkers humming), because it sucks, I started concentrating on Sugar Ray's career. And really, how the fuck did these guys manage to get a recording contract? Every song I can think of sucks worst than the last one. Is it because the lead singer dude is attractive? He must be because his singing reminds me of a shit flinging monkey. Actually, I take that back because at least monkey screams are more dynamic. I came to the conclusion only complete shitheads would find some level of joy listening to Sugar Ray.

Sugar Ray sucks.

2. Easy: Safe = Marketable
Appeals to the broader base. Has nothing to do with artistic ability.

3. Easy and safe given, I would assume they'd be a one hit wonder
On par with say, 'yummy yummy I have love in my tummy' but these clowns have charted numerous times.

6. Sometimes, I have to remind myself
This is the same Country that shits themselves over a karaoke contest held every year on Fox.

8. Why?
The evidence is all around you, nearly all the time.

And I say that as a former fan of the karaoke contest. This year not even the auditions could lure me to tune in.

12. For me, it isn't
I don't listen to the radio or watch TV. I go to the occasional movie and listen to Stern on Sirius. I didn't know Miley Cyrus was Hannah Montana, remember!?!?! I don't see what you people see, man! Like, today, I heard someone talking about Lady Gaga. I had to google it/her to find out this was a person not a place or thing.

Bah... Lady Gaga... see I don't have the reaction you did to Sugar Ray (meh) but Lady Gaga... oh I wish you hadn't said the name even.

14. And for the record I don't listen to the radio either.
I was unfortunate enough to learn about Lady Gaga right here in the good ole Lounge.

10. From the looks of them Max Faxtor or Paul Mitchell

They didn't have to be able to sing...just look good and dance well. (IDK if either of those requirements were met).

11. I saw a "Sugar Ray Greatest Hits" Cd and thought to myself...
how in the hell did they get get enough songs to warrant a greatest hits CD?! My brother knew McGrath back when he was in the Shrinky Dinks and said that he was a major asshole back then too. No major shock there.

21. For one thing, he's pretty good at self-promotion.
IIRC, the first time I heard of him he was hanging out on the Howard Stern show quite a bit. Howard may have helped promote him. A number of years later, I believe he also became one of the hosts of one of those entertainment "news" tabloid shows. And yes, I do believe looks helped a lot. Fortunately for me, though I have heard and hated a song or two of his, it wasn't enough for me to remember them.
