Caviar is fishy and salty and slimy. It's expensive cat food. There's a lot of exotic high-end food that tastes like crap but you have to pretend to like it so you don't look like a rube. I think brie is another one of those foods. Slimy, smelly cheese. Bleh.

33. I had it years ago.....at a social function my Aunt had with her friends |
|
it was a private party, but she invited my Dad and I to it ( Mom wasn't interested in this ) That was the first and last time I had caviar....and they had beluga (sp), which I think is one of the higher-end caviars out there. There was two other kinds, and I tasted all three...all of them disgustingly salty and tasting so strongly of the sea I almost spit them out...and I normally don't mind anything salty ( being a fan of junk food and ramen noodles ).
Anyway...it's something I don't care to try eating again

Unless you try it.
And do so with a good fine beer, not champagne.
Caviar was never meant to go with champagne.

I love those too, as well as salmon eggs and flying fish eggs on sushi.
Good caviar tastes great. If something tastes like the bottom of a well-used minnow bucket, maybe it's not because it's caviar, but because it came from the bottom of a well-used minnow bucket.
quality and freshness matters always.

while the overly salty sea flavor descriptions are correct, nobody is nailing the texture (which to me is more important) little pearls that burst with that flavor when you pop them with your teeth or tongue.
Personally I didn't care for the caviar I tried (hand carried from Russia by people who should know what is edible) but we had it with blinys (or however you spell it - crepes by any other name) and they were too soft for me. I think the cream cheese and toast points or crackers would be better. I still wouldn't really like it, but I could eat a few with some shots of vodka.

42. Dudes--the last time I had caviar was a Mexican-Italian wedding. |
|
Well, not exactly. It was Mexican-Italian girl, marrying a total American (pronounced Ahmerrygahn) kind of like me. But it was the best thing evr. There was mostly Italian food, with some caviar laid out with the cheese and salumi. And there was a mariachi band--and I will tell you what--I loved !! I've been at sucky-DJ Weddings. A mariachi band rocked my world by being listenable, unpredicatable, totally good, and toe-tapping. So, yay for that.
As for caviar, it's salty and fishy, but it's the texture I think that makes it work (I've also eaten the cheap caviar you can sometimes get from supermarkets--that's just salt and fish spooge--not texture, fine rain, iffy taste). The eggs snap open when you taste them, and release a kind of salty-fishy-gelatinous wonderment.
There's a diner by my parents in the Russian part of town where I think I can get proper blintzes with caviar--it won't be as good as I think, so maybe I'll take a flask of vodka with to make it better. That's how I've always wanted to try it (although I've also had blintzes without caviar). You know, just to be doiing the thing the way...I dunno. (Psyching up myself: Sounds good--blintz, caviar, swig from the flask. Note to self, do this thing. Caviar is more than the little red sprinkles on sushi.)

53. Caviar is high in Omega 3 oils. |
|
One of the reasons it may have been considered a luxury; back when it was first eaten, people became healthier. It was also rare, which raises the price and thus becomes a luxury. Good caviar is not just salty fish flavor, it has subtle nuances. Now that it is being cultivated and cheaper, salt is added to increase the flavor.

The only time that caviar ever tasted good to me was when I was at a party and the hostess made an egg salad and covered it with caviar. Otherwise, I would not go out of my way to eat or buy it.
