How is your garden growing? |
|
Still early here (Chicago area), but it's finally warm enough that the peas have popped, strawberries are spreading, raspberry and blueberry bushes are greening and an assortment of herbs is beginning to return.

In the last week my butterbeans, carrots, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, eggplants, corn and peanuts all sprouted. The banana trees were replanted last week and seem to be doing ok. The strawberries are ripening everday. The herbs we let grow wild are growing like gangbusters. We also finished terracing the back fourty and enlarged the pond along with digging a new pond for silt retention.

2. We haven't planted anything yet (PA). |
|
Our frost date is May 15, but we don't put the plants in until Memorial Day.
We added a huge raised bed garden this year, so we are still getting that ready. Can't wait to start planting! :hi:

6. Wow! You have a lot going on. |
|
How big is your plot?
It's always a temptation to plant tomatoes and peppers too early. I have my plants set out in trays and slip them back in the garage on cooler nights. I'm going to wait about three more weeks before putting them in the garden.

9. I rebuilt and slightly enlarged 6 raised beds this year |
|
A client rebuilt a deck and I got the old redwood so I improved my raised beds. There's a lot more space to put in more and I'm nudging my landlord little by little to get the area cleared and get some top soil in. Getting the landlord's son-in-law to clear the field is problematic. I think I'm stuck with what I have for a while.

Actually, I don't have a garden, but your subject line reminded me of a nursery rhyme.

7. wild strawberries in one planter (no fruits yet) |
|
Half the tulips are done, some are just starting, the wisteria is just starting to bloom, the hyacinths and daffs are done, the iris greens are up as are the lily plants (no flowers quite yet, but soon), and my clematis is green, buds will probably start Mid-May. My QE rose also is busy, but no flowers yet, probably in May/June sometime. Hosta leaves are also up and some flowering in the shade beds by my fence.
Oh, and a bleeding heart plant I bought end of season and threw into the yucky bed by the garage is blooming with white hearts! That was pretty cool to see- I didn't even notice the foliage the other day!

I surrender to their overwhelming numbers. They're like cannon fodder...I pull them out, and the second wave strikes. They have beaten me.

11. Just picked peas and pulled carrots. |
|
The oranges and grapefruit trees still have plenty of ripe fruit too. We're harvesting all of the lettuce this week to make room for tomatoes, peppers, and the rest of the summer hits. My list would be similar to NV Whino's give or take a few things.
Next month we pull the onions and garlic.

12. Just bought seeds, soil and plants |
|
and also some of those upside-down hanging tomato thingies :P
Planting before May 15th is iffy here so everything is waiting in my garage.
I'm not planting in the ground this year - just in pots.
Too much going on around the house w/repairs and the such.
Pots will be more manageable and easy to move if needed.
Loved my local nursery owner when I asked for just a few onions and carrots and radishes. He refused to charge me (in feigned disgust) b/c what he was giving me wasn't worth the cash register tape :)
Wish me luck!
