10. Interesing historical note. The "Spanish Flu" of 1918 was really misnamed |
most experts now feel it orginated in the US at the make shift barracks being used for all the new recruits being prepared for WW 1.

15. I propose a convention whereby any newly discovered pathogen is named for the year |
in which it was found. Add some sort of suffix to distinguish each consecutive discovery for that year. Obviously, the Israeli official who bitched about the name "swine flu" hadn't thought about the possible consequences of naming it the "Mexican flu." We're still living with the effects of calling HIV the "gay plague." Can we just opt for some system that doesn't stigmatize people? Sheesh.

23. Now if the MSM would just use the scientific name |
and would stop flogging the vernacular, perhaps there'd be a modicum of social sanity around these things. It might help if the MSM would take the time to explain the derivation of the scientific name. Unfortunately, H1N1/A is apparently insufficiently sexy as far as they're concerned.

As opposed to the inevitable pandemic flu of autumn 2009. Really, I would rather have this apparently mild strain now than get the ass-kicker winter variety.
