Ways to deal with an a-hole boss? |
|
Anybody know any ways to get a jerk of a boss off my case? Any ways that don't involve violence, that is?
I've got a supervisor who demands impossible levels of work, doesn't which subordinates get mentally or physically broken as long as she promotes regularly, takes credit for all subordinates work, and doesn't back us up AT ALL.
Admittedly, I am a smart-ass and would never want to supervise a person like me, but I don't deserve this (nor does anyone else in my department).
Suggestions?

She's a hypochondriac, so that would be particularly effective, too.

Invite her to lunch, say you have something you need to discuss (find something) then at lunch order exactly the same beverage as she does. Talk in passing about how you've been sick for weeks. Halfway through lunch, at a moment that she's only half paying attention, pick up your beverage and set it down directly next to hers. After a minute or so, pick up hers, bring it close to your face (but don't drink) and set it down next to yours but slightly closer to you.
Insist whichever glass she picks up and drinks from next was yours.

6. So long as you're the only one complaining, you don't stand much chance |
|
Tyrannical bosses are able to succeed because most people will accept such treatment. The only real influence you can have as an employee is if you have more worth to the company than her. Generally the best (and perhaps only) way to effectively flex those muscles are through collective grievances made to higher levels.
Here is the way higher levels of management usually look at the problem. They have a supervisor that is able to get her employees to produce a high amount of output, and the complaint and/or turnover rate is low. Therefore everyone must be happy, or at the very least content. However, if they have a large number of employees getting very vocal, now they have a problem they must deal with because they are looking at a worker's revolt which may very well affect production. If they have only one employee complaining, and they view that employee's worth as less than the supervisor's, they see this as an aberration that they don't really need to concern themselves with.
The reality that you're up against is that companies don't really care about employees, but they do care about production.

7. That's the real problem; no one else has the guts to make any waves. |

So collective action isn't going to happen. I'd be sticking out my neck all by my lonesome. <sigh>
I suppose a whispering campaign involving nasty personal rumors about her might be satisfying, if nothing else.

8. There's a few other things you can do |
|
As long as you're at least as productive or more productive than the employees around you, the chances of them canning you are greatly decreased. So just set your output goals at the average for your area, and act stupid most of the time. You can also get incompetent supervisors into a lot of trouble by doing EXACTLY what they say and nothing more. She might be able to fuck with your incentive pay, bonuses, etc., but that's about it and it's only money anyway. There's other things that are more important. Life is too short to get too worked up over fucked up bosses and they typically don't last long anyway.
Another thought would be to apply to become a supervisor yourself. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. You can do a lot more damage to her as a peer than you ever could as a subordinate.
