Are you a member of (or do you know a member of) the Knights of Columbus?
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 10:18 PM by ih8thegop
It's a fraternal group of Catholic men 18 years of age and older. My dad was Grand Knight of a local K of C council a few years back.

I think I might join soon.

What experiences have you had with the Knights?

2. I grew up next door to the head honcho of the local K of C
They just drink and bullshit a lot unless one of them runs for Sheriff or school board, or something like that, then they throw the communal resources behind him. All I know, sorry.

4. I remember going to a Friday Fish Fry...
when I was a young kid. I remember good fish, grown-ups drinking martinis and have a sense of lots of red vinyl.

'Hope this helps! ;-)

7. K of C free-throw shooting contests
Seriously. Don't know if they still do it but when I was a kid they had a free-throw shooting contest every year (so did the Elks Lodge). I went on to the District contest 3 or 4 times. We'd shoot free-throws and then they'd feed us. It was fun.

Most of the Hispanic men in my home town were in the K of C. Great bunch of guys. :-)

8. My Neighbor Is In KofC
and he is one fine, extraordinary, human being. Also, I worked as a caregiver in a facility for mentally retarded people. KofC provided playground equipment, televisions, stereo equipment, etc., for the residents there.

9. My only experience of the KofC
was the stridently anti-abortion billboard they always had in downtown Rock Springs, WY.

It gave me, a pro-choicer, a bad taste.

11. Interesting Group...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was the Knights of Columbus who led the campaign to DEMAND that "under God" be inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. I remember when it happened very vividly, and how strange it was to be no longer saying "one naked individual" ("one nation indivisible").

they do have some strange get-ups and I never really knew the origins of the organization, but they seem to do a lot of good.

they were.
And the wives have a K of C auxillary.
I always remember them as being the richer ones of the parish, snooty and licking the clergy's hindside.
It might have change since I was in catholic grade school in the 50's.
The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is good, they do social work, help people out with money, like to pay their electric bill when laid off, etc.

14. I know lots of Knights
But I'm not a Catholic. They're all from my mom's church, and I've catered several of their functions. All Ukrainians. Did one for a mainly Irish group, and boy did those guys suck down the mashed potatoes.

I've heard stories of the Knights initiation; sounds pretty weird, but don't worry, you won't get hurt.

18. Yeah, I guess you get 'dubbed' a Knight.
Kind of like the real knights of the Middle Ages.
