What do you do for a living?
Are you fortunate enough to have a job right now? I'm just curious.

I'm a fundraiser for an economic development agency that works with low-income, Spanish speaking Latinos in San Francisco.

6. I abstract title. I find out who
owned land waaay back when they started keeping record of it and chain it out to now. I keep up with the minerals (oil and gas, etc.) mainly. Does the person who owns the land still own the minerals? Do they own some of the minerals? Gotta make sure all the right people are getting paid when an oil well is drilled. Yes, I work in the oil business. And it is tight right now. Banks don't want to lend the money to pay people like myself.

I practice just a tiny bit of law with my old firm, but those occasions are, thank you, universe, few and far between, because it's more work than I care to undertake.

Mostly, I'm a novelist, although my godson would tell you - as he screamed out the first time he saw one of my books on display in a bookstore - "Tangerine is an ARTHUR?"

I did disability rights for several years, and then moved on to domestic violence (go, Joe Biden, go). Now, I'm washed up and can't physically keep up, so I get SSDI. My mind keeps up when it's not fogged by painkillers, and my body is just shot to hell. I have very mild cerebral palsy...great that it was mild and I could keep up when I was young, but now that I'm 48, my joints are like they belong to a 75 to 80 year olds body. My bones audibly creak when I move.

played a lot last year, real slow so far this year, really since about October...may or may not ever pick up again to what it used to be, but not sure I want it to. I'll be 58 this summer and even though I keep myself in good shape, doing that 4th set really has started to take a lot out of me...I'm also a damn good teacher, but too stubborn and/or lazy to jump, at my age, through the hoops required for teaching certification , so I sub at a relatively small circuit of middle and high schools and generally enjoy it.

I am a copy editor for hunting and fishing magazines that are published nationwide. This company is not going to be around much longer. Because of the economy, we are losing advertisers and that's where our revenue comes from. So, I'll just hang on here as long as I can, and then retire when the company goes belly up.

46. I maintain Internet connectivity for business customers, mostly.
I identify and isolate problems domestically and globally. Often, this means forcing the telcos, at figurative gunpoint, into fixing their shit. Sometimes I'm convincing a customer that the trouble's in their own equipment. Mostly, I'm trying to understand sketchily-reported symptoms and get customers to clarify what the hell's actually wrong.

I'm a partner in my own company and we do broadcast traffic for agencies and clients directly.

To translate: I get television and radio commercials on the air for network, syndication, national cable and network radio in the US, Canada and beyond. We also traffic spot television and radio.

So when you see the Superbowl winner going to Disney World (or Disneyland) within hours of the game you'll know I worked all night that night.

I'm hoping to eventually make a living as a fiction writer, though I realize how difficult that is, but you'd think that with a degree in creative writing I could find *some* kind of writing/editing type job. HARD labor but it pays good, the company gives anywhere quarter to quarter a 100% to 150% 401(k) match and insurance for the family is 6 bucks every two weeks.

PLUS the job keeps me in shape :) 44 years old and 160ish pounds and do sets on my benchpress with 180 :)

74. I'm an unemployed, self-employed writer, basically living off of past earnings and investments.
Edited on Thu May-07-09 06:13 PM by Mike 03
I am not writing by choice (or, not by choice but by volition, meaning I would love to feel passionate enough to be writing now, but I am not interested in doing so); just at a crossroads right now, with a lot of bad things going on in my life, hoping to find my way over the next few years or so.

Needless to say the only time I generally have to surf DU is at night before I go to bed.

Much of it is met with indifference and the pay is low, but I'll only stop doing it when I'm physically unable.
