MOTHER'S DAY GIFT IDEAS
Please post some unique and affordable ideas for Mother's Day gifts in reply.

I'll start: breakfast in bed, and a clean kitchen too.

2. well.... not really affordable :(
I don't splurge on Christmas and birthdays so every year I end up spending money at Mother's Day. (another manufactured holiday where we're guilted into boosting the economy?)

I ordered her a gift at It's Only Natural. They fill a canvas shopping bag with organic treats. I'm trying to get my Mom to care about the environment and stuff, she's JUST lately started recycling a little, lol. I added organic cat and dog treats to her gift bag :D

This is not a plug or promotion, it's just what *I did!
And it's not all that unique I suppose but it felt better than spending money at a big flower chain. My mom lives far away so I've done that a few years but NO MORE.

3. (and BTW!!!)
(That site is just what I got doing a search for "organic mother's day". I don't wanna start trouble and get TS'ed for promoting anyone.. I don't even know yet what my mom will be getting exactly, or if it will even arrive!)

6. Nah, Mother's Day isn't a manufactured holiday.
Edited on Thu May-07-09 11:06 AM by Lyric
It came about due to the efforts of a poor woman in West Virginia named Anna Jarvis. She started advocating for it in 1907, after holding a memorial service for her own mother, because she felt that it was wrong not to honor the contributions of women to our society, and at that time, motherhood was pretty much THE female contribution. It officially became a holiday in 1914. Nothing whatsoever to do with corporate America or consumerism.

Edit: In fact, Ms. Jarvis later become very angry at "commercialization" of the holiday and campaigned to either restore it as a dignified holiday, or repeal it altogether, if that helps you understand how serious she was about it.

:hi:

8. I'd like to see it restored to dignity, too, for what it's worth.
I really hate the commercialization of our holidays. Commercializing cheapens the meaning behind them, leaving us with generations of kids who think that "X holiday is when you buy X for X" and I REALLY hate that. :(

14. Yah!
I know, I'm sorry. I wish I was close enough to her to spend FREE time! I wish the eco-friendly alternatives were better.. I should think up something more original for next year.

Sorry for setting the commercial mood.. I actually hate that stuff more than anything in the world.

:peace:

17. There's nothing wrong with your idea; I like it.
In fact it's a great alternative to the old tired ideas and a very responsible way to celebrate.

13. I'm not sure what's considered "affordable" but if you want to two-fer your gift
WBUR (Boston's NPR station) is doing a mother's day fundraiser. You buy the flowers and they'll be shipped anywhere, and the cost of the flowers helps fund public radio.

If you want them delivered outside of metro-Boston, you have to order them by noon on Friday.

15. I just ordered this Lemon Cypress Tree for my mom. She prefers live plants to flowers.

The initial cost was fairly reasonable ($29.99), but because I waited until so late, shipping's a damn fortune. x(
