My wife just got certified as a Hospice volunteer in our town a few weeks ago. Sad thing is we just had to bury a family friend today who died 3 days after her doctor finally agreed to sign the paperwork for Hospice.

19. You were a nurse, right?
His B/P was 104/52 and heart rate was 96. So he's a little hypovolemic. but he has orders for no extraordinary measures. They tried to get a line into him for parenteral morphine, but the veins were just too fragile. So they're hoping they can start him on some buccal morphine patches.

23. Yep, I was a nurse.
BP is a bit low, but OK, but his heart rate is a little high. Right now he's compensating but eventually he won't be able to.

I suspect his death will be easy. Being in a coma helps. As do the morphine patches...

Hang in there...we've got your back.

:(

I know (from the pictures you've shown of him) that you are close to him.

We're all here for you - but you already know that. And your sensitivity to this makes you very much a man. Don't allow anyone to have you thinking otherwise.

A great big hug to you, sweetheart.

The problem is, we haven't always been close. He was responsible for my parents' marriage breaking up. I hated him for years. We started getting closer again in the last ten years or so. And when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December of '07, in a perfectly understandable gesture, he started lashing out at his loved ones. And our relationship, always dicey, soured again. it's tough...

27. Thanks, babe.
Another rough patch was the start of the Iraq war. He's always been sort of a left-leaning moderate. Left-leaning, because he HATED authority figures. How's that for a career Army officer? Anyway, he turned hard-right on the issue of the war, and it got tough to talk to him. But in the last few years, it's been easier; When I visited him in November, he said: "I can't wait until we get that FUCKING IDIOT out of the White House!"

He cast what is almost certainly his last vote for Barack Obama...

28. I think you already know that I spent many years doing volunteer work for Vietnam vets.
A lot of bitterness. A lot of loneliness. Those guys were left behind to deal with the ramifications of what they witnessed firsthand. Over the course of my 11 years of work, I'm pretty sure I've heard everything. And it's devastating to me.

I very recently got done explaining to a friend of mine, how someone can support the troops, but be against the war. I'm sure that people like yourself and your dad know where I am coming from. While it seems that you and your dad had some serious differences, you will always have that in common. Brothers in arms, and all that. It's a bond that can't be broken - but you already know that. ;)

Peace to you, babe. Try to get some sleep, k?

58. Good going, Aristus. Now you've made a noncom tear up.
We did serve together as did your dad. The time and place doesn't matter. In the words of a former naval officer friend, "We all wore snappy uniforms and did insane shit."

FWIW. The worst thing that can happen to a person is losing a child. My parents lost two. I took what comfort I could when my father and mother died in thinking that at least they wouldn't have to grieve for me. I could bear the burden; they couldn't.

So, from a British Tommy

I am wounded, but not yet slain.
I'll lay me down and bleed awhile,
Then rise and fight again.

For your Dad, soldier and healer

Ave atque vale, frater.
