The closest thing that English majors have to do in terms of college math is Linguistics, which is like math with words. *shudder*

I'll have to take a basic "Intro to Concepts of Mathematics" class eventually as a GEC, but that's it.

I'm going to try and test out of having to take Math 121--WVU offers credit by exam for classes like that. Since it's mostly logic problems, history of mathematics, and basic algorithms, I should be able to manage a passing grade with some studying beforehand.

Yeah, I usually do have high standards. My first semester in college, I got a C+ in physics which was a little devastating, lol.

My first semester, I got two A's, a C, and an *F*. Series.

At the time, I protested loudly that my teacher (a brand-new, smack-out-of-grad-school guy with no teaching experience) was shitty. He didn't explain things properly for an intro-level class (Philosophy) and assumed that all of the stuff HE took for granted that "everybody knows," *we* would also somehow know. He gave us an archaic, indecipherable textbook, no study guides, no review sessions, nothing.

Out of a class of 103 students, only two people passed--both Senior Philosophy majors who were only taking the class for throwaway credit before graduating. The teacher got schooled by his department for his heinous job with our class, but they took no action on behalf of his students. I thank god every day that my college has a D/F repeat policy. I'll be repeating that course next semester, which will wipe out that F from my GPA, if not from my transcript. Since then, I've had four straight semesters of perfect, 4.0 grades. Four President's list certificates, six awards won, and three publications. If that's not pretty good evidence that the problem was with HIM and not with ME, then I don't know what else would be.

The one "C" was a bullshit grade, too; it was for a Sociology 101 class. I got perfect scores on all four exams, and perfect grades on all homework and quizzes. However, I missed two days over the "three absence" limit (due to bad weather--we were iced in at home) and that knocked my ENTIRE grade down by two letters. I protested, and was told "it's just policy--sorry." Bullshit policy, if you ask me. Since then I've fucking hitchhiked through blizzards to get to class, believe me. *sigh*

19. It's surprising that the teacher didn't just curve the grades

Having only 2 people pass looks bad for the teacher. I would think that he would figure out that he needed to change his teacher/testing style or adjust the grades at the end of the semester. I had an macro. economics teacher who was very tough. Only 2 people passed the first test. I think the highest score was a 71% and I had the second highest at 65%...the rest were under 50%. But he allowed people to drop one test score or the three quizzes (which equaled a test). He was a tough teacher but he made adjustments to make sure people understood the material and to help people pass.

I was actually happy I had him as a teacher because it helped me later in a business economics class. A friend and I both had this same teacher for marco. economics and we did very well in the business economics class. Many others in the business economics class, however, struggled. Too bad your professor wasn't good enough to actually work with the students to help them succeed. It's good you can take the class over but that probably means you have to pay for the class a second time, right?

20. He was really, REALLY new.

That's all I can figure. I've heard in the two years since then that he's drastically changed--a readable text, more explanation, etc. I think he didn't realize how bad the problem was because there were only two exams--no other grades, no homework, nothing. Just those two exams. I guess he didn't get just how BAD he was until everybody totally bombed the final. You'd think that the first one would have clued him in. I've never gotten a bad grade in my life, but I got a "D" on that midterm--I was crying over IM with Oeditpus Rex when it happened. It was so damned frustrating! He just refused to believe that he was expecting WAY too much residual, underlying knowledge of his subject for a 100-level class full of freshmen.

Anyway, this time around I'm taking it with the best, most experienced professor in the department--she's the CHAIR of the Philosophy department, actually. I don't anticipate any problems. :)

21. Congratulations!

I got my final grade for my College Algebra class today and got an A. I only take one class per semester right now as I have a 3 year old at home and my husband travels quite a bit. I thought I was totally getting a B, so I was really happy. Not to mention I went back to school last fall after a 10 year hiatus. I could kick my ass since back then my parents were paying for it---but then again, I knew everything. :eyes:

22. Your situation sounds a lot like mine.

In 2007, I started college ten years late as well. :) Like you, I have a kid, although mine is nearly nine and more than old enough to be in school during the daytime hours. That makes going to classes a LOT easier.

Likely gonna get another internship on top of it, hopefully at HBO or ABC since they actually pay their interns. NBC is giving me a modest stipend this summer, but I'd really like someone to start giving me a little cash
