Found a baby Robin on the ground :( |
|
As the subject says we found a baby Robin while walking through our backyard. This little babe is just about ready to fly. I have a feeling it is the last of the nest and just could not get flight quite yet?
Anyway, we did not see a nest anywhere near, so we made a new one out of a bowl. Thankfully, the elder birds came around after we put the wee one up and started feeding.
Should the new nest be left alone even though it is fairly filthy now? It is full of poo already :(
I did put a few holes in the bottom of the bowl for water drainage.
This little guy will survive:)

1. I've been told that song birds |

Need to learn how to fly from the ground. Chances are your little guy has a pair of devoted parents nearby, feeding him and keeping an eye out for his welfare. Just make sure he's protected from predators like cats (and small children), and he should do just fine.

3. I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago, and |
|
I got this advice directly from a friend who rehabilitates wild birds:
1. No, the mother will NOT reject it if you handle it or touch it too much, so don't be afraid of that. Birds don't have much of a sense of smell, to be honest--they'll never notice your "scent" on the baby.
2. Get a cool whip tub or a big plastic ice cream tub. Fill it with torn-up toilet paper or paper towels--not newspaper, as the ink can be poisonous. Put the baby inside of this and secure it somewhere up off of the ground--tack it or tie it to a low limb, for example.
3. Walk away. The parents WILL hear it crying and come feed it. If the "nest" gets nasty, take the baby out long enough to change the bedding, then put it right back. Beware--Mom and/or Dad might divebomb you if the baby cries a lot while you're doing this, so try to keep it quiet during the process.
In a few weeks, the baby will be old enough to start fledging--eventually it will fly off by itself. When it has lots of feathers, if it STILL hasn't flown off, you can place small worms in the nest--Robins eat worms, and well-feathered fledglings are old enough to eat them without needing Mom to pre-digest them first.
Good luck!

When placing the new nest, the parents dived on me and were full of noise :) I feel glad of the interest:)
It is almost dark now and the parents are still coming back every few minutes.
The wee one may have a leg not working, but is up and looking over the edge of its new home.
We will do what we can to watch this little one fly off:)

5. The little fella made it through the night:) |

I haven't seen the parents feeding it yet which is a little concerning.
The Wrens are hard at work already, but when are they not? :)

6. I found a whole nest scattered about |
|
and hatched eggs laying on the ground. No sign of the birds anywhere. Maybe the Mother got rid of the nest when the babies were able to fly on their own. Or maybe something got to them. :(

I think they start later in the morning:)
Kind of keeping an eye out for predators though. This little guy is vulnerable

I can tell this one is ready to fly anytime, but not quite yet.
I was watching earlier and the babe popped out of the nest and stood on the limb of a tree for a few minutes. Finally, it fell to the ground:( I let it run, and flap its wings for about 15 minutes, but no flight.
We put it back in the nest and the parents are back to feeding it:)
Just hoping for the best now. I hope to see this little guy fly out of here soon.
