Just got back from Star Trek. I gotta say, Zachary Quinto just wasn't doin' it for me as Spock.

Something was lacking. The rest of the characters were great. (Although I wish Uhura had been given more of an active role.)

Anybody else feel this way? Or is it just that I love Leonard Nimoy too much and can't let go?

1. You love Leonard
Not that that's a bad thing. What's not to love? He's on Fringe now BTW. It took me a bit to warm to Zach - I think it would have been better if I wasn't going - why is Sylar Mr. Spock? But having watched it twice, I think he nails it. See what you think a second time round. Oh and did ya catch Winona Rider as Spock's mom? I missed that first time round. :wow:

2. Winona Rider, really?
I didn't catch that at all.

And, yeah, I intend to watch it again. It's definitely worth it, despite my not really caring for Quinto. Maybe I'll like Sylar, err, I mean young Spock better the second time around.

3. I know right
Check it - http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0040549/ Star Trek (2009) Amanda Grayson (Character) Played by Winona Ryder.

Good makeup and good acting from clepto Winona! I love how JJ Abrams gives good actresses a boost when their career needs it - like he did Kerry Russell in Mission Impossible III where she was excellent.

4. I never saw Mission Impossible III.
But I like Keri Russell, so maybe I'll give it a shot. Very cool of Abrams to give her a boost.

5. It was shockingly good - due no doubt to Abrams directing and the same writers from Star Trek
I didn't care much for the first two movies which Abrams had nothing to do with - but yeah - if you liked this Star Trek, it's a safe bet you'll like MI 3. Also - Phillip Seymour Hoffman as an awesome bad guy! Tom Crusie's crazy scientology stuff turned off a lot of people around that time so they didn't see the movie. Is damn good though.

8. It took me a while to warm up to him
I started getting into his character when the whole...well, spoiler

Vulcan was being attacked/destroyed...its hard to see another actor portraying Spock, but I think Quinto did a good job. The only character I didn't care for was Chekov, he was irritating as hell to me, but if it was the directors wish to make him annoying, I guess he achieved that. :)

Did anyone think that Kirks mom was Kirsten Dunst? I swear it was her, and when I looked her up on imdb, it was Jennifer Morrison from House(Cameron)...I was shocked, that I didn't recognize Morrison(big House fan here), and I can't believe I mistook Morrison for Dunst.

9. I didn't think she was Kirsten Dunst, but I didn't recognize her either.

Now that you tell me it was Jennifer Morrison, it seems obvious. Funny how that works.

10. yeah, it does

it showed her face full on a few times, and my wife and I both thought it was Dunst, and I didn't recall hearing about her inclusion in this film...and basically the same about Morrison, went over my head. They did good with Winona, although I did know that she was in the movie as Spocks mother.

11. I thought he did fine - with the caveat that there is NO replacement for Nimoy.
Edited on Sun May-17-09 03:47 AM by GaYellowDawg
I'd probably feel better if Quinto's voice had a lower, scratchier timbre like Nimoy's, but it doesn't. As for Uhura, she got as much screen time than anyone outside of Kirk/Spock/McCoy - but those three are the bread and butter of the show. I would like it if (SPOILER, scroll down to read)

when Cmdr. Spock was in Ambassador Spock's ship on a collision course, they'd given Uhura the conn and she'd been shown in the captain's chair ordering the Romulan missles shot down. Something like "target those missles and FIRE!" I think that could have been very cool, but I don't know how else you would expand her role. Uhura never did have a large role in TOS. A lot gets made of the interracial kiss, etc., but she never did much outside of an episode here or there.

12. I think it's the voice that's the problem for me, too.
Edited on Sun May-17-09 04:05 AM by Kitty Herder
I was just going to add that thought to this thread and come to find out, you've done it for me. I thought about it and it occurred to me that my biggest problem with Quinto is his voice is too high for Spock. Nimoy has a lovely baritone.

Now that I've put my finger on the problem, it doesn't bother me much anymore. I can see him as Spock more now. Fascinating. ;)

Edited to add: And no, there is NO replacement for Nimoy. Maybe that's my other problem with Zach Quinto? He's like an attempt at replacing him. What if they make more of these movies and Leonard Nimoy gets too old to be in them and Quinto becomes Spock in the mind of the public? Oh, I'm a pathetic fangirl.

13. Well, you just gotta get past that.
Quinto will become Spock in the eye of the public with a couple more movies. From what I understand, there are at least two more planned and I know the cast is signed for at least one more. Of all of them, I thought Karl Urban had the best take on the character. I wasn't sure how well Eomer would do as McCoy... but he did a GREAT job.

Reintroducing the characters under different circumstances and getting them into the "right" positions - captain, first officer, etc., etc. - made up the bulk of the movie and was what made it cool to me (I'm an alternate history fan, so I actually got a two for one deal). Now that they're in the right positions, I wonder what the next thing will be?

The one thing I really wish had been done differently is that they'd found a way to save Vulcan. Or managed to evacuate the majority of the planet.

14. Yup. It was a parody of Trek; they ripped off more lines from Trek movies and TV shows...
JJ (not-so-dyn-o-mite) Abrams had a bunch of ghostwriters... double-ghostwriters if the people he used as ghostwriters rummaged through Trek's most popular scenes. As he's on record for not getting into Trek, I doubt he sat through the movies and TV shows to pick up all those lines...

It was an alternate reality... no room for what made 60s and 80s movie-Trek work. Abrams really doesn't get Trek at all if what he's written has no resemblance TO Trek...

The actors were good. Apart from Spock, the characters are parodies. Like how they were in Trek V, except the cast isn't whining to the director and writer in protest of how they're being misused for lame comedic effect.
