Message board words and phrases you hate
Edited on Mon May-18-09 09:32 AM by Patiod
No need to justify them, just post and rant if you feel moved to do so.

Mine:

'puter for computer

"I call bullshit on ____"

I stop reading at that point. "Waiting for it" never improves the punch line. Quite the contrary.

but wasn't sure if I needed just the 'S' or the whole string all over again ;)

Reminds me of NASA and their acronyms. They use regular acronyms and double-nested acronyms (an acronym made up of other acronyms.) There are rumors of triple-nested acronyms (acronyms made of single and double-nested acronyms) but no one's been able to come up with any yet...

100. That annoys me too.
I don't like a lot of the gimmicky things that happen on DU. It's just that so many times, people just have to copycat someone else just to try and be "cool", when, imo, it's not really cool at all.

If one person went around posting +1 all the time, I wouldn't be so annoyed at it because that person started their own trend. But when 2,398 people do it, it loses its flavor.

Same with "Your concern is noted", and other things I can't think of right now.

It's right up there with "whatever", or, as a client told us today when we found out that the input they promised us would not be avaialble in time for the research that's been in the works for 2 months: "It is what it is" (the 2008 version of "whatever").

And the client was over age 22. And still wrote "it is what it is" instead of "sorry, we dropped the ball because we haven't been paying attention for 2 months."

35. IMHO
I hate internet shorthand in general - soon we'll all be typing in capitals and abbreviations. I am already seeing shorthand thought following shorthand writing.

But this one bothers me more than most, because the "H" stands for "humble". Bullshit. Either you own your opinion or you don't. Have the courage of your convictions. If you were really humble, you'd shut the fuck up and not post it at all. (Note how forcefully I stated this opinion - and what's funny is that people will often do the same thing AFTER typing "IMHO")

Also, cut the ellipses.... ..... ....... :nuke:

I don't mean to impugn you in any fashion. You've been here for such a long time. But, as it happens, and I mean this lovingly, the use of "beg the question" for "call into question" or "raise the question" is one of my hot buttons.

To beg the question is a specialized logical fallacy.

117. Received like a true champ!
Exactly as I would have taken it.

Imagine my dismay when, as a pompous adult, I discovered that the word "disheveled" was not, as I had always thought, pronounced "dis-heveled", but, rather, "dish-eveled". And I no longer went out each morning, fully heveled.

Or, as a kid, hearing ads for candy bars with the creamy nougat center, I had it fixed in my mind that nougat meant center. So, in Freshman Communications I wrote that such and such reveals the nougat of the problem. When I got my paper back, I became emotionally un-heveled again.

Cheers!

156. Well...there is a time...and a place...for ellipses...
I don't really think that a single ellipsis is necessarily ellipsis abuse, even when it's not really quite appropriate. It's multiple, repeated, and inappropriate use that bugs me.

For example...someone...on a mailing list...that I'm on...used to put...an ellipsis after...every few words...as if...she had just...run a marathon...and was like...totally...out of breath...and couldn't say more...than a few words...without...catching her breath...she never used...any other punctuation...because like...who needs periods...or question marks...or...commas...when ellipses can...go anywhere...and do anything...it was really hard...to read anything...she wrote...because...well you get...the picture...I just quit...trying to...read anything she...wrote...

157. There used to be a very handy use for ALL CAPS.
Up until about five years ago, I could determine which way to vote on California ballot propositions simply by visually scanning the voters guide booklet. Whichever side of a proposition used the most full sentences and even whole paragraphs of all caps was the wrong side. It was about 95% accurate. However, it has gotten to be that everybody on all sides uses so many all caps that they all look like stupid, screaming jerks.

56. "Pwned" was a hilarious misspelling of "Owned" in a popular video game
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pwned

++++

pwned

A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.

+++

I must admit I enjoy seeing that one, it makes me laugh.

115. Techincally, few of them are true acronyms
An acronym is an abbreviation that is also a word (or by common usage, becomes a word, such as "scuba"). "ROFLMAO" and the like are not really acronyms.

Just getting that out there. :-)

160. Oy, I hate "teh"
"Kitteh" doesn't bother me that much because it's primarily (as far as I know) a DU Lounge thing and not widespread. Besides, it appears in a sentence where a noun (a more important word than a definite article) should be and so attention should slow slightly as you read it.

However, misspelling a definite article, that the mind's eye should just glide over, disrupts reading and confuses. I wonder when someone will decide to misspell "a" as "q" and "an" as "qn". Then we'll get to try to decode sentences such as "Teh quick brown fox, q sprightly kitteh, and qn amoeba walk into q bar, and teh barkeeper's kitteh says..."

Made up: creating the most fascistic extreme quote to bolster the poster's RW leanings and attributing it to Ben Franklin or Thomas Jefferson...

overused: ANYTHING by H.L. Mencken...Since I've read just about EVERY quote attributed to him at one time or another, i've come to the conclusion that Mencken may not be the best person to quote...He evidently had a very simplistic, cynical and absolutist view of the world...

So, clearly PWNED is in there... along with LOL, ROFL, ROFLMAO, ROFLMAOPMP, LOLOLOL, LOOOOOOOOOL, and any other expression of how goddamned funny you think something is.

While the twin annoyances of FAIL and WIN are not quite subject to the full brunt of my contempt, as yet (because they usually come accompanied by a funny picture), I must say IMHO is in my contempt's full view. There's nothing humble about your opinion if you need to preface it with IMHO. You've just announced that the verbal diarrhea to follow is likely to be so arrogant and smug as to not be measurable with current technology. I bet you think you're being ironic. Depends. "Asshole" is visceral and unpleasant and communicates anger well, but what is an "asshat"?

It's so abstract as to be devoid of value as an epithet. It's hilarious to see someone build into a furious rant and then deflate it by calling someone an "asshat".

192. I don't even know what it means.
Since FTA means Fuck The Army, maybe it's Fuck The Warnhals.

Or since BTW is By The Way, maybe it's Found The Way.

Or maybe it's something completely unrelated to similar acronyms:
Funny, That Wingnut
Fold The Wampam
Foul Turd Wind

153. I hate it when people say vozzzzz instead of
vase. Dammit, it's vase. It rhymes with base for crying out loud. Quit trying to make it sound all fancy and shit.

I know they spell it the same on the internet, but I can tell when people are thinking vozzzzz instead of vase. I can just hear it amidst the rest of the voices in my head and it annoys me. I'm used to the other voices, but hearing that word makes all the other voices quit and I get lost without the voices telling me what to do, dammit!

164. Good call.
Usually when I'm reading a post and I get to a part that says "WAKE UP PEOPLE!" I stop and move to the next post. To me, that's akin to calling others 'sheeple' or intimating that you have some kind of ability to detect things that the average person can't. Which to me is pretty arrogant.

was that stupid fad of randomly mixing lower case and upper case letters. It made stuff so hard to read. Eventually I concluded that anyone who did that didn't have anything useful to say, so I quit trying to read them. I am SO glad that fad has faded away.

174. That was a case of the kids trying to do what the 'cool' people were doing...
... only they did it badly and overdid it and so the cool people stopped doing it. :P

Originally it was usually only used in things like signatures and flashscreens at the beginning of homecracked programs and whatnot. Never for casual conversation. Then AOL happened and suddenly kids were online trying to be cool like the 'hackers'.

Nothing makes me want to put someone on DTM more than that. I don't know why that bothers me more than "lolling" about something that clearly is not funny enough to make anyone actually laugh out loud.

180. Two more: "I hope you're being sarcastic?" and overuse of the word 'fuck'
Fuckity fuck fuck fuck is pretty annoying, but at least it's trying to be self-parody. People who write "I hope you're being sarcastic?" are just dumbasses. First off, it's not a question, unless you're for some strange reason asking me whether you hope that or not. But more importantly -- yes, you knucklehead, if it occurs to you to ask, then I'm being sarcastic and you are being deliberately obtuse.

184. Okay, I thought of one more. People who repeat the last letter of a word for emphasis.
Like when someone wants to tell you that they liked your post, but they just type words like "SMILEEEEEEEEE" or "Hugsssssss".

The E is silent, you nitwit. A "smy-leee" is not a stronger facial expression than a smile. And only an anthropromorphic snake hisses after the word "hugs." At least have the phonetic sense to write "hugzzzzz" if you're going to stretch out the sound. If you're not going to stretch out the sound, don't type the word like you want me to pronounce it that way.
