The ones I have are to the point where they're getting bald to the point where no combover will help.

Just what I needed.

1. may I recommend Discount Tire?
"free" replacement (they get you with valve fees, but still cheaper than a new tire) and really free repairs. Hell they have repaired tires for me I didn't even get there.

2. I think that's where I bought my last set of tires.
Their prices are good and they have repaired a couple of tires for free.

11. Oops. Insert a "you" between the "get" and the "impeached"
Crappy typing strikes again!

5. I hear you
Mr. MG's Saab needs new tires (and new snow tires, but we suppose they can wait)...and my Jeep's catalytic converter just shit the bed...and I've been needing new brakes for several months now. Yeah, we can afford all that. Sure!

6. Nokian WRG2 all-weather will rock your world
These are the tires I'm putting on my Saab 9-5 after I finish off the snow tires this summer. I've used the Nokian all-weather tires in the past and they kick serious ass year-round. They're about 85-90% as good as a full blown snow tire in the worst winter weather.

7. Good luck to you! The last time I bought tires, the ad said $69.99, and the fourth one is free
Somehow it still wound up costing me about $490.

Quite a mark-up from $209.97!

15. You gotta watch some of 'em...
"Why, these boys is so slick, they could steal a hot stove without droppin' an ash..."

Could be a couple of games - a simple bait'n switch ("would whitewalls in be OK? they are a little more, but we have them in stock.... Ba-bye, $500) or the lowball (Lessee - that's 69.99 for 3, $18/tire for mount'n balance for 4, a 4-wheel alignment for $89, $5/ a tire disposal fee, and $99 for our "Gold Shield" road hazard and service plan - that'll be $490, please!)
The old carachter I used to work for played it straight, though. His price was mounted (with proper machines, lubes, and sealers) with a new valve stem, 2-plane dynamic balance with new weights, installed on the car and HAND TORQUED, and the spare and jack stowed correctly. When you comparison shop, get your prices for everything up front, so's you're comparing apples to apples.

16. You're exactly right about the lowball
When they rang me up, they presented a list of charges as long as my arm. Hell, if I'd known it would be like that, I'd have them put the tires on the rims and I'd put the damn lug nuts on for myself!

In all my automotive dealings, I have found only one garage that didn't try to screw me (well, as far as I know).

18. It's like food
Local is best! When you include all the services and charges, the good local guys can generally meet the chain's total price, with better quality work. What the chains sell is guaranteed mediocracy - but it's consistent. The worst (typically a city deal) is an independent who knows he will never see you again. Ba-da-BOOM-da boom!

8. I just bought tires this weekend.
I ended up with Bridgestone Potenzas. These are high performance all weather tires, supposed to last 50K miles. The OEM tires were Goodyear Eagle RSA. They suck; they only lasted 37K miles. No way was I going to buy those again (especially since they are over $200 apiece).

I like Discount Tires. But they didn't have a good deal on tires for my car (which has big wheels- 17 inch- for a small car). So I went to Goodyear instead.

17. Well I hope you don't have a RAV4 Sport edition
My wife drives one of those and she needed new tires. Apparently, however, RAV4 Sports have different tire sizes than regular RAV4s that cost twice as much. Ridiculous if you ask me.
