You might want to make it "were a smoker" to match the verb tenses.

6. Naw, it's colloquial speech. Referring to one person as a "they" lets you break other rules too.

Unless they're cremated.
Then the smoke is released and we all have to breathe 1st hand corpse-smoke AND 2nd hand cigarette smoke.

Oh, wait....
Will burning the tobacco smoke *purify* it?
