I just bought some vegan shampoo. |
|
I didn't know there was such a thing -- thought it applied only to food. Interesting.

1. Well, I can see that. Some products are made with things that |
|
aren't vegan. Most probably are actually.

Pesticide-free? No lanolin? No sulfates? I am intrigued. Is it edible?

6. No animal products, apparently. |
|
I don't think it's edible, though.

8. Honey for instance isn't vegan. Not sure if shampoos are made |
|
with honey, but still an example. I am not the one to ask. Where is lefty of flvegan when you need them?

No, probably not edible. (Bleah, I've tasted soap, even vegan soap, and it's not delicious.) Non-vegan shampoos might have things like guanine, keratin, bee products, oleic acid, placenta...lotsa stuff.
Vegan means a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, nonhuman animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. It's not just a food thing.
(edit: sorry, I used to be tofunut--not known by many, sure, but at least recognizable as a vegan...)

16. Every shampoo I have ever bought says it isn't tested on animals. |
|
I wonder which brands still do test on animals. Time for google!

14. A vegan shampoo will be completely cruelty-free. Meaning |
|
it doesn't contain any ingredients derived from animals/bugs, etc nor will it have been tested on lab animals.
What brand did you get, and more importantly do you like it?

15. To explain what a personal care product needs to be vegan: no animal products, no animal testing |
|
Edited on Thu May-21-09 12:37 PM by LeftyMom
Typical animal ingredients that show up in shampoos are animal fats, honey or beeswax, lanolin, animal-product derived fragrances, and animal product derived vitamins.
Most of the big commercial brands are not vegan, but these days most grocery and drug stores also carry at least one "natural" line which is frequently vegan.
edit: god damn it, bunny suit boy types faster than I do.

21. That's what I thought... |
|
I like the stuff. It's "Desert Essence Organics" green apple & ginger shampoo, and it really smells good. It's also wheat and gluten free, which I don't quite understand since you don't eat it (even though it smells nice).

22. Some people have allergies. |
|
I haven't heard of anybody having a contact allergy to either, but continually exposing the body to an allergen could make future reactions worse, so it's a good idea to avoid it as much as possible.

19. Was it made from real vegans? |
|
Yes, I jest, from The Addams Family:
Girl Scout: Is this made from real lemons? Wednesday: Yes. Girl Scout: I only like all-natural foods and beverages, organically grown, with no preservatives. Are you sure they're real lemons? Pugsley: Yes. Girl Scout: Well, I'll tell you what. I'll buy a cup if you buy a box of my delicious Girl Scout cookies. Do we have a deal? Wednesday: Are they made from real Girl Scouts?
