Smokers/retail workers: What are tobacco prices where you live? |
|
On Saturday, i had a customer come in and buy 5 cartons of Marlboro Lights (price was around $250). She was going home to New Jersey, and said that the price here in WV was just a little over half of what she would have paid at home, so she was stocking up for the summer.
Average prices here in North/central WV:
Premium Brands (Marlboro, Newport, Camel, etc...) - $5.00/pk Generic Brands (USA Gold, Basic, GPC, etc...) - $4.00/pk Bugler (roll-your-own, w/papers): $3.50
What about where you live?

2. New Jersey - $7-8/pack |
|
When I was in VA with LostinVA, when I would be heading back up to NJ, I'd buy cartons of cigarettes. Friends in NJ would actually put in orders with me.

They were literally 60% cheaper.

17. Used to go to DC every week or so and stopped at... |
|
that strip mall with the 7-11, Popeye's, and cig store just over the bridge-- everything I needed for the rest of the trip. Then they put in the WaWa and all hell broke loose.
Can't do that any more from here, so I just stopped smoking when it got over 5 bucks a pack. Now it's over 6, pushing 8 for some brands.
(there is the Poospatuck reservation in Mastic with Delaware-priced smokes, but they are under severe fire from the state and NYC and won't last much longer)

6. All I know is what I buy: |
|
A tin (5.29 oz.) of American Spirit Original Blend is about $34 and a box of Premier tubes is $3-something.
Within the last year or so, that same tin went for $15-17.

I just paid $21.50 for a 6 oz can of Zig-Zag and $2.25 for a box of Gambler tubes and I thought that was high, guess I should be grateful I'm not paying more.

Kings(like Marbs/Camels) are 3.79 a pack, carton usually runs anywhere between 38-42 dollars...
Middle of the road types, like GPC's and what not, run about 3.50 a pack, about 35 a carton...
Lower Grade, like Pall Malls/Cheyenne's, Echo run about 2.50 a pack, cartons anywhere between 21-30 dollars...
Currently, I'm smoking pall mall light 100's, 26 bucks a carton...I use to smoke marb ultra light 100's, but cartons at 40 were pretty damn high, my price limit on cartons is roughly 31 bucks...
pall malls smoke pretty good, and of all the lower grade one's I tried, Palls agreed with me the most.

I think a carton in CT now costs around $40.00. They just upped the Federal Tax, I think. I hate it when they decide to "tax the sins" as I heard someone put it. WTF, why not tax the churches or something and give us sinners a break??

9. NC - around $4.40 for premium like Marlboro |
|
Will go up to $5.40 if the $1/pack tax increase here in NC is approved. I'm not a smoker or a retail worker - but I notice how much a friend of mine is shelling out for the cancer sticks. Luckily three really good friends of mine have quit and one more is about to give it a shot.

15. Cigs are called cancer sticks for a reason and the one camel |
|
I met - meh. We didn't get on.
Sure, things seem cheaper because we don't have a sale's tax. There's a reason why NH Wally World parking lots are filled to overflowing every weekend by out of state license plates.
Live here and Graniteland owns your hindquarters. Property tax, View Tax, etc. Buy a new car and sticker shock was a pleasant memory. By the time you're done getting the wheels inspected, registered and license plates you're tapped. And don't make home improvements if you don't the money to shell out to Concord.
Like the man said, Pay me now, pay me later, but you will pay me.
I'm not complaining. I love it here and I don't expect to get through life for free. Compared to many places we're not wage slaves to the state, but it's not libertarian heaven.
That's Na Hampshah. Graniteheads are many things, some fairly bizarre, but they're not by any stretch of the imagination hamsters.

19. They are $4.96 per pack plus tax for Marlboros here in Ohio. |
|
I quit smoking a little over a year ago when they were at $4 a pack. The price was a big motivater I'm sorry to admit. I just kept thinking when I'd shell out $60 a week for smokes that I could buy a damn nice car for that. I haven't bought a car, but I've done some home improvemnt type stuff since then and paid off a lot of debt.

And for the rare times I'm on the parkway, you throw them a penny, honk and move on. Only suckers give them 35 cents. BTW, how much more are tolls in DE?

Only toll is going into NJ, the one bridge I know is free from PA to NJ is up in Pennsylvania by New Hope/Lambertville but seriously - who wants to go to New Jersey?

27. Why would we want to go from DE to NJ |
|
Let's see:
1.) Sales tax - we have none in Delaware. New Jersey, what you're at 7% now or something? 2.) Car Insurance - I live in downtown Wilmington and pay $1200 a year which is pretty cheap compared to most 3.) Property Taxes - I'm under $1000 (I think I'm around $750) - what are you paying. 4.) Our beaches are free - NONE of them require you to pay money to enjoy them.
Why would we want to go to New Jersey other than to pass thru getting to New York City.

If you lived in an small city the size of Wilmington you'd be paying thru the roof.
Where you live they figured the worst you'll do is kill wildlife (which it seems you do already)

You've been up here. Is it Deliverance Country?
The only wildlife I've ever killed was a chipmunk (in Deliverance Country), cardinal (that was in VA, and a snake.
The stupid deer ran off when I hit it (that also was in Deliverance Country).

|
Loose tobacco, for those who roll their own, have literally doubled in price. It used to be about $12.50 a can; now, it costs $25 a can, still a better deal than straight smokes for those who want to save money and can put up with a little extra nicotine and no filter (100 filters still cost about $1.29).
