What do you keep stocked in your pantry at all times?
My wife and I recently got a new apt. with a walk-in pantry, and in order to cook at home more we've begun to stock it up with as much dry and canned foods as we can think of that we would need. I keep thinking I've forgotten some things though. What do my fellow DU'ers consider essential to a well-stocked pantry?

1. We have a two year supply of rice and beans.
We won't go hungry.

It is a good thing to have extra food, you never know what might happen.

I think at least a two week supple of food.

3. You mean besides a teenaged Taiwanese prostitute?
Collard greens. Of course I prefer fresh but when it comes to high fiber bowel maintenance, I'm practical.

8. If you are a cat butler, you'd better have
cat food. They get grumpy and vocal when it's missing.

Good soy sauce (i.e., Pearl River Bridge) oil (olive and other), dried mushrooms, chili paste, tomatoes, pasta, sesame oil, beans, spices of all sorts. Pretty much anything you can think of. :)

15. El Pato - well stocked would be about 50 cans
Edited on Mon May-25-09 06:07 PM by Kali
coffee, teas, flours, sugars, cornmeal, oats, (other breakfast cereals?) rice, beans (dry and possibly canned as well), pasta, salt, pepper, corn starch, dried garlic, onion and other spices, vanilla, tuna, salmon, tomato products - lots, rather than heavy cans of broth that are mostly water, I keep bullion cubes or powder - whatever is cheaper, but I usually make real. Crisco, oils, soy sauce, Tabasco, pancake syrup/honey, molasses, cooking wine/sherry, raisins, nuts (freezer item, actually) dry milk, chocolate/cocoa powder, any canned vegs or food you like - I'm pretty much not into any but spinach anymore. Peanut butter/jams/preserves/dried or canned fruits. Baking soda and powder.

In addition the semi-perishables like potatoes, garlic, onions.

Also foil, plastic wrap, wax paper, butcher paper, parchment, plastic bags and that sort of thing if you use them.

If you really have room get a freezer.

17. All the baking necessities;
Various types of canned beans, tomatoes, tomato paste etc. Dried soups for dips and flavoring. I have a huge selection of herbs and spices, various curry ingredients, cinnamon sticks, anise stars... all that sort of stuff. Jarred or canned Asian cooking necessities like chili paste, some premade sauces tomato and otherwise, various grains and noodles, tvp, coconut milk sweetened and non sweetened, dried coconut the same, and lots of stuff I'm not remembering. There is almost nothing so satisfying as a well-stocked pantry. Oh, and different oils for cooking, though some of these do better in the fridge. :hi:
