Why the hell can't Jedis fly?

Seriously, they can lift shit with their mind and do all kinds of other telekinetic shit. Why the hell can't they fly?

Usually they just use it to enhance jumps and pad landings, although there have been cases of jedi hovering about.

Now, my question is this: We know that E.T. can use his telekinesis to fly. Why the hell didn't he just fly back to the spaceship when it first took off? :)
