Inspired by Charlie and Algernon--what programs would you add/drop from Discovery Channel?
This USED to be my favorite cable channel but lately...not so much. I like Dirty Jobs and Deadliest Catch okay...but they seem to want to fill up with forgetttable reality programming and less about science. Mythbusters is okay..but its less about science and more about blowing things up.
They used to have lots of fascinating specials on ancient cultures (like Egypt--I love the stuff about the mummies and such) and I like the stuff about volcanoes, even if its a little over-the-top stuff like supervolcano!
Occasionally they do have good stuff still like Planet Earth...but it seems few and far between.

1. Everyone but Mikey and Rick on American Chopper
would be chained to their bikes and kick-started off a cliff.

That, or canceled.

2. get rid of that paranormal bullshit
Also, fuck Mike Rowe- dirty jobs is stupid. Mythbusters used to be fun, but has gotten stale. Finally, shark week needs to be less frequent or halted until they find new shark-related programming.

16. Mike Rowe would be cool
if he didn't ruin every job he's ever attempted. I get it, the backbone of society is dirty, but don't make it harder on the people who are actually working the job.

3. Get rid of all the reality shows and go back to their original content:
Documentaries from around the world about science, nature, geography, and history. I recall some fantastic programs from the 1980s, particularly a series called "Victorian Values," a British documentary that showed how the Victorians thought about poverty, crime, sex, business, and so on, and with a detectable sideswipe at the retro values of Thatcherism.

While we're at it, The Dog Whisperer is an interesting program, but not back to back all day on The National Geographic Channel.

If the cable channels went back to their original content (documentaries on Discovery; non-World II, non-occult history on The History Channel, British and Australian dramas and performing arts on A&E, mysteries and comedies on BBC America, foreign films on Bravo, and educational programming on TLC), I'd subscribe again, but now I'm an avid viewer of DVDs.

Who'd have thought that the 1980s were an intellectual highpoint for cable TV?

add more shows like Planet Earth. Get Attenborough to do a weekly show.

13. Dirty Guy and Mythbusters would stay.
Dirty Guy is close to jumping the shark. There are only so many gross things that can be shown.

I have no interest in Deadliest Catch. I don't really watch anything else on Discovery.
