12. The fact that Watterson had such a great regard for the true genius of
Walt Kelly made me an immediate, life long fan. But he was burned (as was Kelly) by the un-authorized use of images - so I can't post an image because of that.

I can, however, recall a favorite Watterson strip (among many) that depicted Calvin slamming nails into the coffee table - the other one I love is Calvin's explaining how his "paint-by-number" artwork would be dumb if he actually followed the picture on the box (or something similar).

Do yourself a favor if you like Watterson - buy a used copy of W. Kelly's Pogo - some are better than others... all are political genius, remarkably timely an just hilarious....

: )

Wish there were more Kelly fans out there - there's something wrong with the world that there are not...

And I have now inherited the Pogo book that I gave him at one time. I have to revisit it.

15. Please do - with an open mind... One book (One book?!) How can you survive with one?? One
isn't enough - which do you have? All are brilliant, some need context (as all important books do) - some are brilliant only after one succumbs to the hook of the writings of WK.

I've yet to find avid fans in my age group who truly adore his work. Honestly, I don't get it. I grew up on it, but I'm not supposed to appreciate or enjoy WK's work - my grandparents delighted in giving me the latest printings of whatever Kelly book was available - and I delighted in devouring it. There was no better birthday or Christmas present than a new (unread) Kelly book... They were huge and cherished. Even more than Barbie dolls... My brother and I had the luck to grow up in a family that cherished Kelly's humor. Having Mischa Auer as my great uncle didn't hurt - there was always an undercurrent of the balance of hilarity, aplomb and formality that made sense only if one had a sense of humor... : )

Kelly's political genius ia STILL and constantly apropos - vis a vis global/political concepts - as well as just the sense of existence and the inanity of such. I hope you have one of the good ones. If not, I'll be happy to recommend..

I'm guessing from the title I gave it to him for Christmas one year. It has a 1963 date on it and "First Printing."

17. aparently I'm the only one that thinks having Calvin for a kid would be way cool
yeah, lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth would be involved, but having a kid with such a unique and creative outlook on life would awesome.

Of course, I had more than a bit of Calvin in me at one time. Spaceman Spiff reminds me a lot of my elementary school experience!
