1. I voted for Johnson, but only because I'm more familiar with his music. |
|
I have, however, heard some Django Reinhardt recordings that have knocked me on my ass!

I love Robert Johnson, but that subtle, clean, singsongy sound of Django's gets me every time.

cause he didn't have any help from the Devil!
and because he had a seriously screwed up chording hand and still could play incredibly.
and no it isn't possible to pick actually.
on edit - I just remembered a really cool anecdote about Django. Apparently one time he was visiting Segovia and played some stuff for about 15 minutes. Then Segovia asked him if he have a copy of the score of the music he had just been playing and Django said "I don't have a score, I was just making it up" I'm not sure what Segovia's response was.

5. Django was a better guitarist, I like RJ's songs better. |
|
I ultimately went with Django, because there are several delta bluesmen I like better than Johnson; but I can't think of a single Gypsy/jazz guitarist I prefer to Reinhardt (I can't think of a single Gypsy/jazz guitarist OTHER than Reinhardt right now, either).

7. django AND robert johnson AND son house AND... |
|
come on, how can you ask a question like that? I can't vote in your poll. It's like...Ray Charles v. Van Morrison...you have to have both.

9. no fair! . . . two virtuosos in two entirely different genres . . . |
|
makes choosing impossible . . . I voted Reinhardt only because he was losing by a couple of votes, and this one should definitely end in a tie . . .

Because his improvisations are the work of (please excuse my French here) a fucking genius. He was totally unique. His work with the hot club de France can start to get on one's nerves after a while, but I think that had more to do with the environment they played in than Django's guitar playing.

17. Not only is Robert Johnson the father of the blues |
|
Not only did he sell his soul to the devil.
Not only was he chased to his death by hell hounds.
But its also my name as well. And I play the blues on guitar as well. So all things consider, there is no way I could vote for anyone else.

Mozart or Bach? George Washington or FDR? Bordeaux or Burgundy?
Actually, I'd probably go with Django just because I think Johnson's influence is slightly overrated.
