GREENSBORO, N.C. -- An off-duty police officer's concealed gun went off during the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament game between Maryland and Wake Forest on Friday night, wounding the officer, police said.

The gun discharged about midway through the second half of Maryland's 87-86 win in the quarterfinals at the Greensboro Coliseum. No other injuries were reported.

The officer, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to a local hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said in a statement. Police said the officer is from another state, but did not say which one.

"It was purely an accidental discharge," said Laura Mullinax, a watch operations specialist with the Greensboro Police Department. "It accidentally fired into his own hip."

Revolvers rely on a heavy trigger pull.

Personally I carry semiautomatic pistols in Condition 3 (loaded magazine, empty chamber, hammer in fired or de-cocked position).

People who REALLY understand firearms safety don't rely on mechanical safety devices.
