Who else thinks punk rock blows?
Edited on Wed Jun-24-09 03:32 PM by eyepaddle
If I get enough responses I'll tell y'all about the hilarious typo I caught just now in my subject line. Yessirre, everybody would've enjoyed that! Shoot, anybody wants I'll go ahead and copycat my own thread. ;)

But at any rate, in several years here in "Da Lounge" I have witnessed many a music flamewar, and I've noticed a bit of a pattern. While pretty much any other genre of music is fair game for some serious flames, most people seem to be of the opinion that the one thing we can all agree on is that punk rock is cool.

I'll admit, back in my youth I thought The Clash were an awesome band. But that really only lasted for about five or six days. Then I heard Should I Stay or Should I Go. I kept waiting for them to stop joking around and actually start the song...after a minute or so it dawned on me. They weren't joking, and that is what I was gonna get. I pretty much consigned the entire genre to the shitheap after that. If that was the best it had to offer, well....

Yeah, for the record I am well aware that I have VERY lampoonable taste in music, but so does everybody, to most other people.

2. Some of it sucks.
I can't lump an entire genre together because of one or two poor examples. If I did that, I'd have to hate all rock just because of Rush and Nickelback (who I think might be one in the same, hmmm) and all of metal because I think Black Sabbath sucks.

3. Fair and valid points, but I just wanted
to make the point that I don't think there is ANY kind of music that we can all agree on--not even the assumed teh awesome punk.

4. Actually, come to think of it, there IS one genre of music I bet we can all agree on:
Hate music is worthless shit. It's shameful that musical equipment is defiled in such a way.

6. Wait a minute, what?
Is Hate music what they play at neo-nazi rallies? Like in American History X?

Then, yeah, I think we have some universal ground there.

7. Yup, that's exactly it.
And there's a whole industry full of that waste, made for waste by waste.

5. Some of it is okay
There's good music to be found in any genre.

For me, though, "good music" has to be in a key. A lot of punk isn't. (Same for a lot of avant jazz, btw.)

8. Punk rock was INTENDED to blow.
That was kind of the point. The entire genre is based on creating music that nobody could like, which is why punk rockers like it.

10. Bad punk is borderline unlistenable.
And not 'unlistenable because they intended it to be and they're being ironic' but 'unlistenable because it really really sucks hard.'

That being said, good punk is really cool.
I'm not a huge fan of punk, but I can appreciate the good stuff. It's just like any other genre, it has its good, its bad, and its ugly.

11. From Zappa's "Joe's Garage Acts II & III"
"All those rock and roll writers
are the worst kind of sleaze.
Selling punk like some kind
of new English disease.
Is this the wave of the future?
Aw, spare me please!"

(That being said, I like some of it too - but when Zappa wrote that in 1979, it needed to be said - especially to the obsequious critics)

13. I disagree as far as saying that about the whole genre
Sure, some of it does in fact blow, but there's some good stuff out there. Keep in mind that punk was not about trying to impress people with shredding or the over the top Prog crap that helped lead to punk's rise.

And to be fair, there's some great playing anyway, especially from Generation X, The Damned, The Clash (listen to more than just one intentionally bad song, please), and even some Joe Jackson Band that fits the Punk genre yet has the chops of more respectable acts (listen to the raw energy and amazing pop on an album like Look Sharp and you'll hear what I mean).

And to be honest, even the "simple" stuff can be harder that it sounds. Everyone is amazed by the likes of Les Claypool or Neil Peart, but honestly playing a single note repeatedly is harder to do well than it seems. Try playing a Ramones song, but with the same passion, speed, and energy they brought to it. It's NOT easy at all.
