Has anyone ever had a pet or known of a pet killed at a grooming
parlor?

Interesting case going on in west hollywood, where a "U Wash Doggie" has killed, get this, at least 6 dogs in the past 2 years....

Looking for comparisons...?

1. Oh how awful! How did these dogs die?
I had my late kitty Lulu groomed several years back, and she got sick from the shampoo they used, but that's about it. Is there a link to an article?

2. I once went to pick up our little poodle-mutt

from the groomers, and noticed that she had a pinkish tinge to the fur on her right leg.. The groomer said that she "wiggled" and got "nicked"..

I took her straight to the vet and that NICK took 4 stitches.. I went back immediately and demanded my money back and made such a ruckus, that they paid the vet bill too..

I felt so guilty though.. she was 14 yrs old, nearly blind and a very timid little soul..

I never took her to be groomed again.. we just scissor cut her moppy fur, and although she looked kind of goofy, at least I never had to put her through that again

7. Something similar happened to me, SoCal
I took my persian kitty to the groomers and the groomer nicked the back of his leg -- didn't tell me about it, but I saw the girl do it, so she had to fess up. Well 2 days later that nick had abcessed and his leg was swollen up to twice it's regular size. Poor little guy had to have an operation and spent 4 days at the vet -- we almost lost him. When I went back to the groomer (won't mention any names but it's a place where smart pets shop), they were very defensive at first. I, like you, had to practically pitch a hissy fit (pun intended) to get the manager out there to agree to refund my money and pay the vet bill. It was horrible. We never went back there even though every couple of months they'll send me a coupon for a free grooming. Eeek.

4. A "Mobile Groomer" Sliced The Paw Pad Of My Sweet Shi Tzu, Mitzi...
... and didn't even BOTHER to mention it to me. She simply put a bit of "nick-relief" (stop bleeding stuff) on the wound and returned her to me.

Moments later, blood is gushing out of the wound all over the carpet and tile!!!! I rushed her to the vets where they were able to take care of it.

I contacted the groomer and gave them a piece of my mind and demanded that they reimburse my vet expenses... and refund my grooming fees. (Which they did.)

But get this... they had the NERVE to "fire" me. They said that whenever a client asks for a refund because they are dissatisfied with their service, then it's their policy to not do business with that client again.

As if!! I would have never called them again anyway... but they got the satisfaction of giving me the boot. Ha!

I should have sued them for pain and suffering and having my carpets cleaned.

5. Drying Lamps
Weren't there a couple cases about 10 years ago in the Virginia area where the dogs were placed under heat lamps to dry, but were forgotten and died that way?
I believe it was either at Pet Smart or Petco.

9. My Greyhound got a huge gash
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 03:42 PM by zekeson
at the vets while getting bathed. The vet was great - it was his tech that failed to use the straps as he had always been a good and calm bather. Something dropped and it startled an already spooky retired racer and he bolted from the tub, caught the edge of the table and opened up a triangle of skin. A couple of staples took care of it. The vet handled the discipline of the tech and I was happy that was all that happened. Accidents do happen.

10. I know of a few people
whose cats got extremely ill from a particular shampoo one of the grooming chains was using. I don't remember the shampoo or the chain, unfortunately, but I do recall that whatever the shampoo is, it's still on the shelves and still says it's safe for cats.

When my cats need bathing, I do it. It would scare them too much to have a stranger do that to them; it's hard enough to have mama do it.

11. I know that place!
SIX dogs!! While our City is too busy passing laws to outlaw declawing in the city (you can go a half a block in be in LA or Beverly Hills and have it done) and make us pet "guardians" instead of owners, this happens!

12. I knew a lady in AZ with a little show dog that was ruined by the groomer
deliberately, she says (she sez it's common practice cuz it's so competitive).

When the dog returned from getting groomed, the sweet little dog was--and is to this day---terribly vicious to people. She says they hurt it while grooming it to make it fear people who will touch it (like judges, for instance). It either had to do with squeezing its testicles or nearly breaking its back.

Whatever it was, it sounded just awful. One of those things that makes you ashamed to be a human being. How can people do that?

13. Not killed but...
I used to date a dog groomer who was an alcholic. She cut the di*k off of a poodle one day after (a liquid) lunch.
