Would love to live in SF but it is just too expensive.

Could anybody give me some information on towns within an hour drive of SF where prices are not outrageous.

Is it at all possible to get a 3/2 house in a nice area for 200K?

Where?

1. I don't think that exist
Not from bay area, but I think you probably need to go 2-3 hour commute to get to the 200K range.

3. I've been no San Francisco once
in 1990. I saw a small 2 bedroom house in Sausalito that was no bigger than my first house (> 1000 sq ft) going for $450K. I'm sure that house now is going for at least $1m.

4. I once entertained an offer from ILM, but declined....
ILM (Industrial Light and Magic)wanted to hire me away from my job at NASA-TV. They were gonna 'triple' my salary.

I couldn't swing it, because ILM was located in Marin and I wouldn't have been able to afford living there, even after they had tripled my pay. They closest place I could afford to live was Santa Rosa. I declined.

I don't know how you people in the Bay Area do it.

6. San Francisco Bay Area
The only reason I am still here in the San Francisco Bay Area is that my unit is grandfathered under rent control, which I believe was nationally outlawed about January 1996. Although I have been lucky where I live, the down side of any place under rent control is that only services legally required or necessary for maintenance of a property value may be provided. This is a great area in which to live for many reasons and the cost of living reflects that. Good luck in your search and may you find happiness and success here.
