Woman Gives Birth To 2 Set's Of Identical Twins
<snip>

Jeffery and Sheryl McGowen waited a dozen years to have a child, praying, hoping and taking fertility drugs.

On Monday morning, they hit the gestational jackpot.

Jacob, Jacoby, Jason and Justin -- two sets of twins weighing from 2 pounds, 5 ounces to 3 pounds, 4 ounces -- were delivered healthy by Caesarean section at the Woman's Hospital of Texas.

Although there is no exact data on such extraordinary events, the odds of having a pair of identical twins is about 1 in 11 million, the couple's doctor told them.

18. Not really
Yes she was carrying 4 babies but they were not from the same initial egg. These are special because they came from two different eggs that both split.

11. I Has a Neighbor Once, Back in the '70s
His name was Fred - Frederick Smith, Jr. Named after his father. He has a younger sister named Frederika.

I think their old man was a bit of an egotist.

:-)

9. No...
4 identicals would be Quads.

2 sets of identical twins would be a set of identical twins who look alike and a second set of identical twins who look alike.

Of course this is all guesswork. I could be horribly wrong.

Again.

13. I think they're still quads, since they shared a uterus
Their twin status doesn't negate that there were four of them in there.

I knew a set of triplets -- two identical girls, and a boy. Started off in utero as two embryos; the female one split. They're still triplets, but the girls are identical twins as well.

20. I object to the use of the words "twins" and "quads"
when they are "achieved" with the use of fertility drugs.. They used to be quite rare and wonderful..

When medicine intrudes and "tricks" nature, the term multiple is more appropriate.. Most invitro procedures usually "introduce" as many as 7 embyros in the process, so "twins" whould be the survivors of the "litter"..

I know that some will take offense, but when papers marvel and ooh and aah over these births, it's misplaced wonderment..

It's truly a blessing for the families, and I am happy for them, but I just wish the media would do some homework and realize that naturally occuring multiples ARE a rare thing, but medicinally induced litters are not necessarily so. They put the mother's health at great risk, and usually result in desperately ill babies...born too soon..

Invitro is so expensive (and sometimes not a "covered procedure") that is causes normally sane people to take extreme measures and risk a lifetime of health problems for their children..

The real solution would be for invitro to cover a range of months and set a maximum of embryos transferred.. Three should be the upper limit..

</soapbox>

5. LOL!
I was thinking the same thing, David, with all the thousands of names available, including a ton of J names, you'd think they could be just a tad bit more original.

Of course, this from a woman who named her son Christopher, real original there, lol!
