antique, rusty, bent, 60 year old nails are better than brand new straight ones. Some of the lumber is still good too - in better shape than any I bought new in the last 20 years.
Baling wire is one of humanity's GREATEST accomplishments.
It is hot as hell again today. I had to come in right after 8. I have a big beach towel I get damp and put on my legs in front of the fan - had to start using it by 9:30 this morning. It is going to be a long afternoon. ugh.

It cools off at night here, thank dog - and I USED to have a pool to get through the hot part of the day, but we are also having some BIZARRE weather - this is like June. Crazy.

nobody uses wire on hay anymore - its all that crappy plastic twine, usually in ugly colors (blue and white are ok ;-) ) I used up the 100 years worth that had been wadded up and thrown up to the attic of the barn a long time ago. I'm now on my 2nd 100 lb (~5 miles) box - and man did that go up in price over a couple years!. So much better than thin gauge tie wire - can't beat it!
duct tape, silicon sealer, jb-weld/playdoh-type epoxy:woohoo:

6. I have a good friend who was injured thanks to bailing wire |
|
...Of course, he was in the back of a pickup truck in Mali, and the bailing wire was holding the rear axle on.
But still. Bailing wire. Scourge of Africa. :D

2 x 4's used to actually be 2 inches by 4 inches.

I should take a picture where I butted two 2x6's together - at least 1/2 inch difference.
You would love this old stuff (maybe - it's pretty weathered) - its straight, has held up to livestock, horses chewing on it, weather. A couple years ago a huge cottonwood branch fell on this section and I just "ranch-rigged" it at the time. Finally got the big dead branch out of the way and I'm putting it back together with various scraps from other sections that have been altered or torn down. Sure as hell can't afford new lumber and it's such garbage anyway.
