Describe the music you love with one list
The list can be anything: artists, albums, favorite songs - even a combination of these things. Whatever you think conveys your taste the best. The list can have any amount of things in it.

I'll use a artists list to describe what music I love. I'll stop here, or else it could take up the whole screen:

Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, The Beatles, Bill Haley, Elvis, The Beach Boys, Abba, The Byrds, Simon And Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, CCR, Herman's Hermits, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, James Taylor, Big Star, Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Roy Orbison, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Shangri-Las, The Crystals, Cheap Trick, The Cars, Bruce Springsteen, The Bangles, Blondie, Go Gos, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Joan Jett, B-52s, Grace Slick, U2, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Green Day, Hole, Garbage, Kay Hanley/Letters To Cleo, Sinead O'Connor, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Liz Phair, Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, The New Pornographers, The Hold Steady, Radiohead, Belle & Sebastian, Fountains Of Wayne, Stars, The Decemberists, Kelly Clarkson, Michelle Branch, The Corrs, Kate Voegele, Avril Lavigne, The Veronicas, The Dollyrots, Damone, The Like, Pink, Lisa Loeb, Metric, Hey Monday, Aly & AJ, Barenaked Ladies, Dixie Chicks, Neko Case, Alison Krauss, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Little Big Town, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless, Merle Haggard, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, A Fine Frenzy, Aimee Mann, Camera Obscura, Rilo Kiley, Chris Isaak, Nina Gordon/Veruca Salt, Josh Ritter, Regina Spektor, Brandi Carlile, Loreena McKennitt, Molly Jenson, The Weepies, recent Mandy Moore, Abra Moore, The Pierces, Sufjan Stevens, David Gray, Eisley, Bonnie McKee, Thea Gilmore, Amy Rigby, Jo Davidson, Stacie Rose, The Format, Alicia Keys, Cindy Alexander, Beetoven, Mozart, Wagner, etc.

1. Funny how on these lists I always leave out..
the Monkees, but don't mean to. Perhaps the best "boy band."

3. My faves.
the more unusual ones:

Zouk, from the French Antilles. (Kassav' is the greatest band that ever lived on earth.)

Soukous, originally from the Congo, though most of the artists reside in Paris. High-energy dance music, the happiest music in the world. African rock 'n roll at it's very best.

Merengue, in the form of Juan Luis Guerra, another super-artist who transcends everything. From the Dominican Republic.

Salsa, from the Nuyoricans. Ruben Blades, Willie Colon, and many others.

I could talk about American genres, but everybody knows them.

Not much difference between The Shins and Belle and Sebastian and between Neko Case and Mindy Smith, for example.

But people would get bored after a while. :-)

8. Hi, tigereye!
It might surprise you, but I like The Ramones and Clash. I don't think they'd make my list, but they are good. I have London Calling but no Ramones albums yet. The only album I have on pre-order is the upcoming A Fine Frenzy album - new music will mostly have to wait.

How are you? I'm pretty good except for possible jury duty next week. But even if I do have to go and am picked, it could potentially be a neat experience. :hi:

15. Road to Ruin is a good CD by the Ramones to pick up.
The extended addition adds a bunch of bonus tunes, including really good live versions of Blitzkrieg Bop/Teenage Lobotomy/California Sun/Pinhead/She’s the One from the Rock N Roll High School Soundtrack. It's a good "best of" CD to get into them.

35. oh, my I haven't been on a jury for years!

No, I'm not surprised - you seem to like a lot of adult alternative stuff, and The Clash and the Ramones set the stage for a lot of that, some of which I really like. I'm a huge Ramones and Clash fan - they were just becoming big when I was a college student, and that's why I became such a big fan of both. The Clash were simply an amazing astute, clever and musically adventurous band and the Ramones played faster than anyone I had ever heard up to that point. They blew a lot of blandness right out of the water.

I have a good friend from my college years whom I have to thank for all my love of alternative musics and college radio which exposed me to all kinds of cool stuff - jazz, punk, Tuvan throat singing, Sun Ra, other alternative jazz, the Velvets, and a lot of other interestingl artists.

It's really, really hot today - odd, since it's been such a cool summer so far! :hi:

32. I tend to differentiate between rock-n-roll and rock music.
Chuck Berry- rock-n-roller
Steve Vai- rock musician

New York Dolls- rock-n-roll band
Rush- rock band

I love rock-n-roll but think rock music is just ok. Rock music feels stale to me and has no swing or swagger. Rock-n-roll is raucous, joyful, young and rebellious. Rock music is mature, serious, technical and carefully measured.

I think Sha Na Na was the best band at Woodstock.

11. I'll just go with what I've bought over the past few months
I like a variety of music covering several genres, but I'm mostly an alternative and metal guy. Here's what I'm rotating on the boom box right now.

The Sounds, Wild Light, Trivium, Opeth, Ozzy Osbourne, Dream Theater, Black Label Society, Rush, Vampire Weekend, Dimmu Borgir.

I'd love to have a big ass home audio set up, but I live in an apartment building. I'd love to feel those double bass drums thumping in my chest.

16. Some stuff is really hard to assign to one genre.
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 10:39 AM by Forkboy
Some of what I listen to is easy to peg, but a lot isn't. Even under the black metal tag there's subgenres that are totally different from one another. Some black metal is totally aggressive and raw and fast, other BM is mellow, moody and ambient. They're both BM but they're nothing alike. And a lot of genres are like that.

Having said that, I'll see what I can do. :)

Jazz - Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Dizzy Gilespie, Dave Brubeck

Blues - B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, T-Bone Walker, Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, Etta James

Rock - David Bowie, Van Halen (pre Diver Down), Queen, AC/DC (Bon Scott only please), Rush, Trouble, Cheap Trick,

Heavy Metal - Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Motorhead, Deep Purple

Thrash Metal - Voivod, Metallica, Slayer, Vio-lence, Wargasm, Kreator, Death Angel, Sepultura, Coroner, Sacred Reich, Sacrifice, Pestilence, Atheist

Death Metal - Autopsy, Abcess, Carcass, Coffins, Obituary, Death, Nile, Opeth, Disembowelment, Asphyx, Septic Flesh, The Monolith Deathcult

Crossover Punk/Thrash - D.R.I., Cromags, Leeway, Only Living Witness, SSD, Suicidal Tendencies,

Punk - Nomeansno, Dead Kennedys, Minutemen, Crass, Stupid Babies Go Mad, G.I.S.M., The Gories, Didjits, The Ex, Bad Religion, Against All Authority, Victim's Family, D.O.A., Ramones, Boris, The Dickies, Melt Banana, Straw Dogs

Post Punk - Butthole Surfers, Ed Hall, Crust, Cows, Old Time Relijun, Alice Donut, Steel Pole Bathtub, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282

Industrial - Zoar, Grotus, Loretta's Doll, Genghis Tron, Ministry, Porest, KMFDM, Sistrenatus, Front 242, The Axis of Perdition, Frontline Assembly, Acumen Nation, Diagnose: Lebensgefahr, Skinny Puppy, Killing Joke

Stoner/Doom - Yob, Church of Misery, Electric Wizard, The Melvins (I could put these guys anywhere), High on Fire, Sleep, Goatsnake, Sunn O))) (pronounced as just Sunn, after the amps of the same name), Witchcraft

Hip Hop - Paris, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (Michael Franti), Public Enemy, Dalek, Beastie Boys, DJ Acucrack

Black Metal - Deathspell Omega (holy shit!), Woe, Leviathan, Burzum, Anaal Nathrakh, Wolves in the Throne Room, Xasthur (pronounced Za-sir), Bathory, Emperor, Ulver, Aborym, Watain, 1349, Cobalt, Absu, Craft, Hiems, Nachtmystium, Paysage D'hiver, Shining, Akercocke

Grindcore - Pig Destroyer, Napalm Death, Agorophobic Nosebleed, Dead Vertical, Repulsion, Heresy, Fuck The Facts

Noise - Emil Beaulieau, To Live and Shave in L.A., Merzbow, John Wiese, Infidel?/Castro!

The too fucked up for any genre genre - Sun City Girls, The Residents

17. What makes grindcore grindcore?
I listen to Beyond the Pit on Liquid Metal on Sirius and it's supposed to be an hour of death metal, black metal, and grindcore. I know what distinguishes death metal and black metal, but I haven't figured out grindcore yet. It also surprised me when I learned that Suicidal Tendencies wasn't a straight up metal band. I used to listen to them a lot when I was growing up and I just considered it good ol' metal back then.

20. Usually the blast beats are the most noticeable difference.
The term came from the grinding style of guitars mixed with hardcore punk. There's different styles of it, but the songs are usually short and aggressive, and have pretty hateful vocals. Agoraphobic Nosebleed did a CD called Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope that had 99 songs in 20 minutes. One review called it the "Paul's Boutique" of grindcore. Repulsion and Heresy were real early examples of the genre, but Napalm Death really put the genre on the map. Pig Destroyer is easily my favorite of the bunch. Their last CD, Phantom Limb, is the best example of current day grindcore, imo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_27XyFRLRI&feature=related

Suicidal's first album was almost pure punk. By Join The Army there was starting to get more metal. I liked all of it. :)

Yeah, I've heard stuff like that before. Metal seems like it's got the most sub-genres of any genre of music. I think some bands are their own genre. :)

24. It's not my favorite genre, but it has it's moments.
Phantom Limb was my #1 pick for 2007 because, even though it's not necessarily groundbreaking, it does what it does to brutal perfection. The only let up is the very end where they have this sad country tune playing like it's coming from a house that you're standing outside of, crickets chirping as night falls, almost as if someone is being watched or stalked. After the previous 30 minutes of intensity that part is a really creepy way to close things out. In terms of sheer intensity and riffiness it's the closest thing I've heard to Slayer's Reign in Blood. It won't have that kind of impact because grindcore is a smaller genre than thrash was becoming at the time, but it's the peak of grindcore.

25. If I didn't use artists, that's the way I would put it
Favorite genres are classic rock, power pop, rock, pop/rock, folk, Motown, and classical.

I also prefer female artists, in today's music at least. Here's how I feel about some notable female artists not on my list:

Bjork - I generally don't like her
PJ Harvey - often good, but a little overrated IMO
Ani DiFranco - meh
Joanna Newson - dislike
Patti Smith - I like her
Colbie Caillet - I find her bland so far in her career
Bonnie Raitt - I love the Luck Of The Draw album, but she wouldn't make my list
Celine & Mariah - two singers that oversing IMO
Christina Aguilera - better than Celine and Mariah
Whitney Houston - she's good
Emmylou Harris - could make my list
Tina Turner - good
Pat Benatar - mostly a meh for me, but I like some artists she influenced
Beyonce - I like Beyonce
Ann Wilson - Ann's very good; like early Heart more than late Heart
Karen Carpenter - could have made my list
Carrie Underwood, LaKisha Jones, Katharine McPhee, Melinda Doolittle, Kimberley Locke, Brooke White - others I like from American Idol
Britney Spears - not a voice of note, but like some of her songs
Miley Cyrus - I don't like her voice
Janis Joplin - one of the best raw voices; could have made my list
Ella Fitzgerald & Etta James - need to buy more of their stuff; great singers
Hayley Williams - strong vocals; awaiting Paramore's upcoming CD
Norah Jones - like her early stuff; newer not so much
Annie Lennox - can't believe I forgot to include her on my list!
Linda Ronstadt - a good interpreter
Vanessa Hudgens - not a fan
Hilary Duff and Jennifer Lopez - dislike
Fantasia - overrated IMO
Harriet Wheeler/The Sundays - would make my list!
Jessica Simpson - dislike
Carole King - great music
Enya - can definitely be magical; would make my list
Imogen Heap - I like her; she's overlooked
Ingrid Michaelson - good; maybe better on upcoming CD
Fergie - I'm not a fan
Amy Winehouse and Josh Stone - Amy wins among these two

Arlo Guthrie! :)

"Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

"Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.

29. Great list! I'm not the only one with a long one
The Who, The Moody Blues, Donovan, The Hollies.. those are just some others we have in common. I'm glad you listed Paul and John solo; they have good work outide of The Beatles.

37. The Nightwatchman is good political music
And Steve Earle, too. Always looking for more recommendations for political music.
