It might surprise you, but I like The Ramones and Clash. I don't think they'd make my list, but they are good. I have London Calling but no Ramones albums yet. The only album I have on pre-order is the upcoming A Fine Frenzy album - new music will mostly have to wait.

15. Road to Ruin is a good CD by the Ramones to pick up.

The extended addition adds a bunch of bonus tunes, including really good live versions of Blitzkrieg Bop/Teenage Lobotomy/California Sun/Pinhead/She’s the One from the Rock N Roll High School Soundtrack. It's a good "best of" CD to get into them.

35. oh, my I haven't been on a jury for years!

No, I'm not surprised - you seem to like a lot of adult alternative stuff, and The Clash and the Ramones set the stage for a lot of that, some of which I really like. I'm a huge Ramones and Clash fan - they were just becoming big when I was a college student, and that's why I became such a big fan of both. The Clash were simply an amazing astute, clever and musically adventurous band and the Ramones played faster than anyone I had ever heard up to that point. They blew a lot of blandness right out of the water.

I have a good friend from my college years whom I have to thank for all my love of alternative musics and college radio which exposed me to all kinds of cool stuff - jazz, punk, Tuvan throat singing, Sun Ra, other alternative jazz, the Velvets, and a lot of other interestingl artists.

32. I tend to differentiate between rock-n-roll and rock music.

Chuck Berry- rock-n-roller
Steve Vai- rock musician

New York Dolls- rock-n-roll band
Rush- rock band

I love rock-n-roll but think rock music is just ok. Rock music feels stale to me and has no swing or swagger. Rock-n-roll is raucous, joyful, young and rebellious. Rock music is mature, serious, technical and carefully measured.

I think Sha Na Na was the best band at Woodstock.

I like a variety of music covering several genres, but I'm mostly an alternative and metal guy. Here's what I'm rotating on the boom box right now.

16. Some stuff is really hard to assign to one genre.

Some of what I listen to is easy to peg, but a lot isn't. Even under the black metal tag there's subgenres that are totally different from one another. Some black metal is totally aggressive and raw and fast, other BM is mellow, moody and ambient. They're both BM but they're nothing alike. And a lot of genres are like that.

17. What makes grindcore grindcore?

I listen to Beyond the Pit on Liquid Metal on Sirius and it's supposed to be an hour of death metal, black metal, and grindcore. I know what distinguishes death metal and black metal, but I haven't figured out grindcore yet. It also surprised me when I learned that Suicidal Tendencies wasn't a straight up metal band. I used to listen to them a lot when I was growing up and I just considered it good ol' metal back then.

20. Usually the blast beats are the most noticeable difference.

The term came from the grinding style of guitars mixed with hardcore punk. There's different styles of it, but the songs are usually short and aggressive, and have pretty hateful vocals. Agoraphobic Nosebleed did a CD called Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope that had 99 songs in 20 minutes. One review called it the "Paul's Boutique" of grindcore. Repulsion and Heresy were real early examples of the genre, but Napalm Death really put the genre on the map. Pig Destroyer is easily my favorite of the bunch. Their last CD, Phantom Limb, is the best example of current day grindcore, imo.

Suicidal's first album was almost pure punk. By Join The Army there was starting to get more metal. I liked all of it. :)

Yeah, I've heard stuff like that before. Metal seems like it's got the most sub-genres of any genre of music. I think some bands are their own genre. :)

24. It's not my favorite genre, but it has it's moments.

Phantom Limb was my #1 pick for 2007 because, even though it's not necessarily groundbreaking, it does what it does to brutal perfection. The only let up is the very end where they have this sad country tune playing like it's coming from a house that you're standing outside of, crickets chirping as night falls, almost as if someone is being watched or stalked. After the previous 30 minutes of intensity that part is a really creepy way to close things out. In terms of sheer intensity and riffiness it's the closest thing I've heard to Slayer's Reign in Blood. It won't have that kind of impact because grindcore is a smaller genre than thrash was becoming at the time, but it's the peak of grindcore.

PJ Harvey - often good, but a little overrated IMO

Patti Smith - I like her
Colbie Caillet - I find her bland so far in her career

Celine & Mariah - two singers that oversing IMO

Whitney Houston - she's good
Emmylou Harris - could make my list
Tina Turner - good
Pat Benatar - mostly a meh for me, but I like some artists she influenced
