I just saw a squirrel fall a good 30 feet out of a tree. |
|
I was taking out my trash and there were a couple of squirrels fighting in a tree. Suddenly, one of them fell out of the tree at least 30 feet and landed in the yard with a thump. The squirrel was still alive. I saw it sitting there, but I couldn't tell if it was injured, so I started walking over to it. The damn thing saw me coming and just hopped away like nothing had happened.
I wish I could do stuff like that. :)

1. I saw something similar a few years ago |
|
I was walking on a path at PSU's main campus when I saw a squirrel fall some considerable distance and land with the same plop. It crouched motionless for a few seconds as though trying to figure out how the hell it got there, then scurried back to the tree.
Another guy was approaching from the opposite direction, and we both laughed that we'd never seen that before. Heck, until that moment, I didn't even know it could happen!
Reminds me of Gary Larson's "Nature Scenes we Rarely See."

2. Lots of oak trees and lots of squirrels in my yard. |
|
I've seen a few take that plunge. I was raking one day and heard a branch break and within seconds one plopped on the ground within five feet of me. The sound it made when it hit was like a squeeze toy, which made me laugh. The squirrel seemed dazed and lay there for about 15 seconds. Another squirrel came down the tree and was jabbering at it (do squirrels laugh at each other?) and the one on the ground sprung to life and chased it back up the tree.

3. I saw the exact same thing in DC (on the lawn behind the Capital Building) we had our picnic lunch. |
|
Two squirrels were fighting and dropped at least 30 feat - WHUMP! One ran away and the other lay there quivering. I figured it was fatally injured. The other came back, not to taunt it but to check on it. Eventually, the second one got up and ran off.
Turns out, though, that DC squirrels are tough - gang squirrels we called them. They surrounded us and started moving in on our sammiches. "Hey, yous a gonna eats that or whats?" They were looking to pull a snatch and run. I had to get up and fend them off while the girls ate. Damn things were ORGANIZED!

5. Wouldn't it be cool if humans were small enough to sky dive without parachutes? |
|
But then many more creatures would be big enough to eat us.

7. I once saw a squirrel jump off a 75' tower |
|
I was doing some work on the tower when we started to remove a tarp from a piece of equipment. There was a squirrel underneath and he immediately took a flying leap off the tower. He didn't even hesitate. He fell all the way down and landed on top of a temporary metal building and bounced several feet up, then landed on the ground. I thought for sure he was dead, but when we got down he was nowhere to be found.

9. I was following my brother in law, he was driving a van |
|
and a squirrel ran across the road, I saw it bounce around in the rear wheel well and then shoot out the side. It shook its head like what the hell and then ran off.
