Can You Help Me Identify The Mix Of My New Rescue Puppy?
Hey all!

Just adopted a shelter rescue dachshund mix on Saturday. He's so gentle and adorable and great with the kids. We love him so much already!

Thing is, we have no idea what he's mixed with. He's 14 pounds and 4 months old. He looks like he's got some pinscher in him but we really have no idea.

I figured the lounge would probably be able to tackle this no problem! I'm putting two pictures of Halo below. Note the pointy ears. Thanks for your help if you have any guesses!

5. Looks like a mini-pin with beagle.
The beagle part is mostly the ears, but the snout is wider than a mini-pin and that would also fit beagle.

Cute little fart, eh?

7. I'm not seeing the dachshund in him, but he looks a lot like my Sparky.
She had the min-pin coloration as a puppy, too, and is also very leggy--but has come to look more Manchester Terrierish to us in the fifteen years since. Our veterinary hospital just shrugged and classified her as a beagle-terrier mix. We'll never know, I guess:

20. The guest (?) on the Bonnie Hunt show the other day
got a kit from Petco or somewhere to get DNA reaults to find out the mix of their pound puppy. I didn't see the part where they opened the Fed Ex to see the result. He was sure that the dog had Besingi in him.

27. I used one as well and I'm not sure what to think.
Everyone who has seen my dog is sure there is lab in him, but the DNA results were as follows:

25% English Setter
25% Norwegian Elkhound
10% Chihuahua
10% Collie
10% Dachshund
10% Irish Setter
10% Weimaraner

They say that it's normal to be surprised by the results but when I showed it to my vet, he was skeptical too. Even if you don't have much faith in the results you get, it's still fun and only about $50.

23. I could be wrong about the Manchster, but I don't think so. I have a mini-pin,
that is too tall for a mini-pin. Looks more like the Manchester to me, and they are very similar to the mini-pins.

I definitely think you hit the nail on the head with the Manchester Terrier mix.

26. OMC, if he's a Manchester Terrier, you'll have a great mouse catcher
should you ever need that service. I remember my dog going after field mice. He could find them quicker than the cats.

He's a cutie. Reminds me of my Peanuts. I was 4 when we got him and he was with us for 15 yrs.

You can kinda tell where the moles have their tunnels. One of my dogs dug a perfect tunnel. Lovely for our new grass!

33. There are labs now,
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 07:30 PM by woo me with science
where you can send a sample of DNA (mouth swab) and get a breakdown of breeds in a mutt.

We know someone who did it at two separate labs, because they were skeptical the labs wouldn't just guess, but results were identical.

Adorable puppy, btw!

43. Min pin...
First guess. Got one ourselves. One that will be curled up behind my legs under the covers in a few minutes when I head to bed.

Min Pins love sleeping under the covers. And they're apparently all major food hounds. Either of these two things would "out" your new pup's min-pin bloodline.

I have to do this a lot and it is really a pain in the butt to get right. Luckilly I don't have to sex cats. The fail rate on that job is higher than breed guessing. :P
