2. That was my first reaction too, especially on the day Les Paul died
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 07:00 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
I love most of Gilmour's stuff, and as a guitarist myself, I have a L-O-N-G list of players that I admire. But "best?" Impossible. That's not what music is about. PERSONAL best, yeah. That's what separates a musician like David Gilmour from...as an example, CC DeVille from Poison. One's an artist, the other is a wanker-slash-effing-clown.

4. Indeed. I could quickly name, oh, 15 who are light years away from Gilmore...
and there's no 'best' amongst them.

Danelectro, or the Gibson double neck.

9. Seen him. He couldn't hold Jeff Beck's nor Al Di Meola's guitar strap
He did make some monster sounds, though.

He was a friend of mine (married to a good friend) a lifetime ago. Really nice guy, great guitarist.

11. There is no one 'best guitarist'.
So it's a matter of opinion. Is Gilmour a better guitarist than Richard Thompson? Prince? Willie Nelson? Chet Atkins? Steve Vai? Django Rinehardt? Even if you narrow it down to 'best rock guitarist', there's a LOT of competition.

13. An instantly-recognizable sound.
One of the handful of guitarists who are unmistakable. And on my short list of greats, even if I couldn't possibly pick one favorite.

If you have to pick just one, he's a good choice.

23. I don't know about the best...
...but Agata from Melt Banana does shit with a guitar that I've never heard before, and with the amount of music I go through that's really saying something.

I think a more fitting question might be who is the best guitarist from certain genres. There's some amazing blues guitarists, there's some amazing death metal guitarists (hello Karl Sanders!), and some amazing guitarists in almost everything in between.

24. From RECORDED history, my favorite is Andres Segovia.
Pre-recorded history, I'm unable to determine. So, the best guitarist of ALL time - unable to determine. But, I'll bet Segovia is in the top ten.

I'm also fond of Prince, Cat Stevens, Chet Atkins - to name a few.

26. If I had to pick
it's a question that can't be answered because "best" can mean different things to different people, but the best I've ever seen personally is Tommy Crook from my own hometown of Tulsa. Chet Atkins once told Johnny Carson in an interview that Tommy was the best he ever saw

32. I subscribe to the Garage Joe Theory.
That is, the greatest guitarist of all time was some guy named Joe who played in his garage and whom no one has ever heard of.
