My dad had a heart attack yesterday. I think it was a very mild one. But they
have to do tests to see what is going on. I'm really nervous about that and hope he doesn't need open heart surgery. It is the first time he has had a problem with his heart and I don't know what to do with myself.

Vibes would be appreciated.

I guess we are lucky that it wasn't a massive heart attack. In fact when the doctor said "you had a heart attack" he said "who had a heart attack?" because he felt no chest pain whatsoever.

1. My heart attacks present with extreme nausea. I've had four.
I wish the best for your dad. I've never had the slightest chest pain either, thank goodness.

When I have a night of extreme nausea, I call the ambulance. I've only been wrong once.

knew heart attacks could present so silently.

5. My dear applegrove...
Heart attacks do not mean open heart surgery necessarily. But if your dad does need that, try not to worry...

It is an established procedure now. Good outcomes are the norm...

Try to stay calm, be there for him. Those are the best things you can do, both for him and yourself...

People can have heart attacks, and have zero chest pain. That's probably what happened to your dad...

I'm here for you, sweetie...

8. He's been a terror in the Heart Institute. He decided to go to the bathroom
and decided he needed to unstick all those heart monitor things off his chest to get away from the monitor. Of course it was a moveable monitor and his nurse thought he was flatlining so she came running in.

Next my sister entered the room and he was on all fours on the ground looking for his glasses. Of course his IV had become unhooked. Then he got back into bed and wanted to reinsert his iv himself.

His doctors told him they likely would be able to do an angiogram until monday and he said "great I'll go home for the weekend" (he likely wanted a good stiff drink).

I love him so much. I just pray he gets healthy and doesn't have to go through the worst of the proceedures. I understand that men who go through heart surgery sometimes become traumatically depressed. So many worries. So I'll keep myself busy and visit him every day. I've also given notice at work that I can only work there 2 days a week from hereon in.

Thanks for letting me vent.

10. Omigod!
ALL those activities would be enough, more than enough, to terrify any nurse!

I hope someone sits down with him and explains how important all those things are...

Good luck to all of you...

12. My dad was depressed briefly after an emergency triple bypass about 8 or 9 years ago
He bounced back reasonably quickly, ( took a little while ,but not terribly long), and by the way, he's now 91 and rides the exercycle a half hour a day. Sometimes he gets bored and goes back later in the day and knocks out another 20 minutes on it...best wishes to your dad and your whole family. He sounds pretty damn feisty and I would assume that's a good sign .

15. Hey, applegrove
It's very good that they're doing these tests. If there's anything serious, they will find it and they can nip the problem in the bud. It is better to know, no matter what it is, than to fret while not knowing.

Try to relax. I know, stupid advice for someone in your position, but it's all I've got. Besides a hug.

Your dad and you are in my thoughts.

22. Don't unspool applegrove.
That it was a mild attack is a blessing. The prognosis is good in these cases; the situation can be managed with medicine, diet, etc. In short it was probably id'ed in time to correct without surgery.

Vibes and good thoughts for your dad and you relax a bit.

It probably means that your dad's early warning system is working well. They know so much these days about how to manage these things.
Take it easy. My thoughts are with you and your dad, who sounds quite wonderful.

out it was a blood clot in his lungs. So we go from there and explore and try to find a reason for that. I hear there are good drugs for that though. Thank you guys. Perhaps your vibes worked - he no longer has had a heart attack!!!
