Attempting to Transfer from a public university to a private one |
|
just because you don't think your school is good enough . Said private University costs $36,000 a year , and get this , you don't actually HAVE the money , and are planning to simply borrow it , saddle your back with all that dept while who can get a good education at 1/10th the cost at the state University .
Am I being unreasonable and a prick to suggest to my friend that what she is doing is extremely loony?

1. "Loony" is off-putting. If she's your friend, you ought to frame it differently. |

Is she going on into a specialized field? If so, is such field offered by a public university? Sometimes you have to go where the specialists are, and if they're at Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, etc... you have to bite the bullet, or change your plans.

4. If she doesn't think she's getting a good enough education at the state U she's smart to look beyond |
|
it for a better program. Without knowing her, I can think of one other reason to make that change: if it's not just her perception but generally held to be true that the private U program is much better than the public U version, that debt may be worth it in the long run because she'll have a stronger C.V. for jobs or grad school.

consideration all the financial aid private schools provide, it's really comparable in price to state schools.
And if she thinks she's going to get a better education, she SHOULD transfer.

6. Don't bet on financial aid at all. And why should a private school accept a transfer? |
|
I know, that Duke, for example, accepted 5 one year.
Transfer students have a lot of problems and are high maintenance for faculty.

of those "high priced" private schools, and our transfer students are welcomed (if they make the grade of course).
Our faculty does not have any problems with transfer students.

9. Does this university offer any major grants? |
|
I'm transferring from the University of Tennessee to Vanderbilt, the latter of which will be CHEAPER than the former because of the endowment and my financial situation in comparison to the majority of the other students.
