I'm partial to this one, as I spent a good deal of time there when I was in college. And the Library of Congress reading room: Many more here: http://curiousexpeditions.org/2007/09/a_librophiliacs_love_letter_1.html

2. Now there's two libraries I'd never get any work done in, |
|
I'd be too busy gaping and exploring. One of my earliest memories is of a library; I was so small I had to reach up to hold the hem of my mother's skirt as we walked around. With little effort I can still remember the smell of the books. Most newer libraries don't have that smell. But it was in attendance when I went back to school in '93 and made use of the Michener Library at the University of Northern Colorado; the building itself is huge but on the back end of ugly. And downstairs in the reference section there was an area set aside to house and display Michener's research materials and manuscripts for 'Centennial'. Michener had taught there back when it was Colorado State College. Anyway, on the same floor were housed the really old books, and you could just follow your nose to find them. There's probably some chemical process that accounts for that distinct scent, but I don't want to know what it is. I prefer to think of it as the aroma of wisdom. . .
