I hosted an open mic poetry reading last night. It ran to 12 and I'm dog tired now |
|
I slept in till 6:15 this morning, which is murder on me if I want to get to work by 7:00. I prefer to get in by 6:30 so I have a chance to really pull together an entertaining lesson, but instead I got to be entertaining for a buncha chain-smoking, beer guzzlin' poets.
I love a good poetry reading. I love being the emcee most of all, cause I don't have to be talented, just clever... plus I get to use the one English word that I'm proudest of having coined: "bartendrix" (as in "Don't forget to tip the bartendrix").
I really shouldn't stay out late on a school night, but I can't help it if I'm addicted to poetry.

You'll need some rules to keep yourself from getting beaten down!
The one I go to every week allows us two poems, or 4 minutes...whichever comes first!
It runs about 2 hours, with half an hour for a featured poet...someone more famous than the rest of us, lol!
Yours sounds like fun, but maybe you'll be happier and more rested if you try something like this...
I hear you about addictions!

2. Oh, we got plenty of rules. |

No one hosts every week. About 4-5 of us rotate duties. It's 3 poems or 9 minutes, you can only heckle in between the poems, no guitars, no singing, you have to tip the bartendrix, and whenever first timers show up, the whole rooms shouts "VIRGIN!!" at them and hoots like horny baboons.
I'll rest when I'm dead. Occasionally it's good to over-do it.

Where are you doing your readings? I mean, if they're having trouble keeping the lights on, maybe they write a grant proposal.

5. Nope, I don't run the show... |
|
I'm a lowly participant, lol!
It's being held in a little coffee shop in a nearby town...
And the power was off due to some electrical glitch...not because of non payment of bills!
