Our RW friend had a meltdown at the Yale Bowl Saturday during the Cornell game.
We were all at a tailgate party. "Joe" got upset because another buddy of hubby and myself showed up with his latest girlfriend. "Joe" starts fuming that he hates the guy for "spreading his 'jism' around." The couple was biracial and the guy is black. "Joe" as you might assume is white. He walked away and then came back, fuming again over some altercation he had just witnessed. Then he starts yelling "They don't have dicks! I have a dick!"

At this point I said pointblank, but calmly, to him: "Joe, if you're gonna start talking about your dick, it's time to leave." I glanced at his wife and she nodded and lead him off.

This is the same guy that got drunk at my Memorial Day barbecue and threatened to kill himself. Why? Because of all the liberals in New Haven. He said they were always calling him a fascist. He really doesn't like it that we're so liberal here. We're pretty good friends and on other subjects he is bright and engaging. But he goes over the line really fast. Booze doesn't help.
He visited us in our vacation home in the midwest this August with his son and 2 grandkids and was OK. It's too bad...his wife says he goes into "downward spirals." I feel really terrible for her when these incidents happen...

1. He sounds a little bit unstable (cough) and maybe you shouldn't travel places with him
*I* offer to bring me and my liberal vibes to your vacation home instead. :P

5. He was great in August, maybe because he was watching how much he drank.
His son and grandkids were nice, son is very liberal, like us.

My husband has some oddball friends from all different walks of life. I like the diversity but this guy sometimes gives "diversity" a bad name.

7. When he's sober he's really interesting and smart.
Something about alcohol that works on his brain. He IS a bit quirky but my husband likes to hang out with him and watch football on TV. They're both from Wisconsin and hubby likes that. But he's a bit disturbed by the guy's behavior when drunk also...

9. CT is a haven for RW icons, though
George W Bush was born here... Ann Coulter... Laura Ingraham... Frank Luntz (just found that one out today!)... and, William F Buckley.

Jonathan Bush lives here as well.

So, he shouldn't be too "alone" here.

10. Well, if you count Yale, yes. I actually encountered Jonny Bush in a funny situation (long story).
I think Ann Coulter is from New Canaan, a real reactionary place (but very pretty).

But our bar population is mostly working class, Yalie, etc. here in the Westville section of New Haven, where my hubby and friend go. It's a real mix. Honestly, I really doubt that this guy encountered any crazies calling him a fascist. I think he made that up.

12. He's not a gun person. He has a Ph.D in Economics and has taught at the University of Wisconsin.
I would estimate that he would be the last person I know to take up guns.

He's just a loose, weird cannon, if you know what I mean...

14. Complicated. Hubby met him at a neighborhood bar that specializes in German beer.
Met Joe. He and Joe are from Wisconsin, love German beer, have lots in common (both alums of U of Wisc. Milwaukee). Etc.

I met Joe and wife and all was well at first. I didn't really encounter them so often but I began to notice that when he was in his cups he would change from a friendly, kinda egghead guy (he was a college professor at U. Wisc. Milwaukee)to a strange person.

Now it's just kinda weird cuz I only see him when he's been drinking...and that's when he goes off the wall...I also like his wife who is nice so we get along and have coffee...

16. Sounds like he needs an intervention.
He's gonna hurt himself or say something at some point to get the crap beat out of him if he doesn't get a grip.

You have my sympathies--it's hard to know what to do in situations like this.
