Cougar wasn't a nickname, it was a pseudonym the studio forced on him because they claimed "Mellencamp" wasn't cool or memorable. When he started hitting the charts, he reclaimed Mellencamp, first going by John Cougar Mellencamp, then just John Mellencamp. But his first hit, "Ain't even done with the night," was labeled "John Cougar."
