Why Liberty University losing today is doubly great:
http://www.liberty.edu/Chancellor/index.cfm?PID=157

Meet the Chancellor

Liberty University is a school that is making a difference! We have a faculty and student body, who are committed to impacting the globe for the cause of Christ. It is our prayer that God will use Liberty to change the world in our lifetime.

Since its inception in 1971, it has been our dream to build a Christian university that is both academically excellent and spiritually vibrant. In just thirty years, Liberty has become the world’s largest distinctively Christian university. Today we are proud to be a part of this world-class Christian institution that is already making a difference across our nation and around the world.

God has blessed us with incredible facilities like the Arthur S. DeMoss Learning Center, Williams Football Stadium, the Vines Convocation Center, David’s Place, the Reber-Thomas Cafeteria, and the forthcoming Tim and Beverly LaHaye Student Center. God has also blessed us with a nationally ranked debate team and a Division One athletic program. But more than anything else, God has blessed us with a tremendous student body, who come from all fifty states and scores of foreign countries.

I want to challenge you personally to become a part of what God is doing at Liberty University. We want you to join with our more than 32,000 alumni who have come to experience “The World’s Most Exciting University” where we are “Changing Lives—One Degree at a Time”.

Jerry Falwell, Founder and Chancellor

1. Oh good. Like Wal-mart, I'm sure this abomination will spread too...
Sigh.

I will give them credit, their website is nicely done. It's just the content that reeks.

2. The Greatest Part For Me. . .
. . .is that they are not a good team and didn't begin to belong in this tournament. There are probably 100 high school teams in this country that could be that collection of stiffs.

How that conference got an automatic bid is befuddling. This is among the best teams in that conference and they got annihilated by a good, deserving team.

If Liberty gets a bid, the NCAA needs to seriously rethink their criteria.

3. A nationally ranked debate team?!
God has also blessed us with a nationally ranked debate team

Eeeeek! Has the rest of the country really sunk so low as to be ranked below Taliban U.?!

Picture the scene inside the "Bill O'Reilly Debate Center":

STATE U.: And in conclusion, it is our belief that...

LIBERTY: Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!!!!!

10. I'd love to know who they're debating with.
If it's the people at Bob Jones, I might just pull for the Liberty University team...

19. I might even bust out for pay-per-view for that one
If it's the people at Bob Jones

Live, from the Bill O'Reilly Debate Center on the campus of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., it's the Ignorant Bigot Conference championship debate between the Flames of Liberty and the Bob Jones University Troglodytes.

Let's go straight to the action...

LIBERTY: Thus, as hard as this may be to believe, it may theoretically be possible for non-whites, conceivably even African Americans, to become human beings, as long as they accept Our Lord And Savior...

BOB JONES: Blasphemy! This proves what we've been saying all along! Our opponents are under the direct influence of the Communist Party!!

(a loud POP is heard)

It appears that Bob Jones will be unable to continue, due to its debater's head exploding. So, Liberty wins the championship by forfeit.

Join us next week for opening-round action in the national tournament when the Flames visit higher-seeded Lokahi Montessori School in Honolulu. Remember, that's a late start, 5 o'clock Eastern. See you there!

5. World's Largest Christian University?
I glanced around the site a bit and didn't see how many students they have, but how can they possibly make this claim? They only have 32,000 ALUMNI in 30 years, how can they be the largest Christian University? I suppose Notre Dame and BYU aren't "Christian" enough. <eyeroll>

6. Larger Christian universities than Liberty...
From studentsreview.com:

Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA: student body 6162
Campbell University, Buies Creek, NC: student body 6522
Duke University, Durham, NC: student body 11,929
Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC: student body 6271

It's a largish Christian university, but it bodes unwell for Mr. Falwell if an atheist can pull out three larger Christian schools without thinking of Notre Dame or BYU.

Incidentally...

Notre Dame: student body 11,054
BYU: student body 32,771

And let's not forget Baylor University--14,221, or Southern Methodist University--10,266...

Then again, it is larger than the unaccredited Bob Jones University.

7. How much of that is from its diploma mill?
Liberty University has a lot of infomercials that sell correspondence courses in bible studies.

20. I think this is enrolled students, not correspondence students
The numbers on the website I used read undergrads and grad students. Not correspondence students.

It makes sense for them to sell Bible study correspondence courses, though. Just spreadin' the gospel of Jesus Christ as interpreted by Doctor Jerry and his intrepid band of snake-oil-and-Jesus salesmen.

17. Thanks for posting this...
So what exactly does "distinctively Christian" mean anyway?

I am a Christian, but don't align myself with the "Christian-er than thou" types like Falwell.

21. Not sure but it doesn't sound good
I thought Falwell's site was a hoot. They require all students at Liberty to abstain from tobacco, alcohol, non-prescription drugs, and sex at all times during their years at Liberty (probably including the summer too). I'm sitting there reading this thinking, "this is like four years of basic training." I thought Sergeant Cloud was a great guy but I sure as hell don't want to go back there!

12. whoa- look at this rule!
Student participation in on-campus demonstrations, petitions or picketing is prohibited unless approved by Liberty University administration. The administration may also prohibit or restrict student participation in demonstrations, petitions or picketing at places other than on campus, where such participation would contradict or otherwise compromise the principles and policies of Liberty University.

22. "Reverend" Moon must be pissed that Falwell didn't thank him for
bailing out Liberty U. when they were about to declare bankrupcy (about the same time that Falwell was on tv flacking the "Clinton Chronicles" to raise money to offset his losses). OTOH, maybe Moon thought Falwell is giving him credit when he attributes everything to God, since Moon thinks he is the Messiah.
