What's the story behind your username?
I'm kinda new here, so I apologize in advance if there have already been numerous posts like this, but I was just wondering about some of the usernames on DU.

The first part of my username (Cursive_Knives) is from a line from a Bikini Kill song, "Bloody Ice Cream," which goes: "I've another good one for you/ We are turning cursive letters into knives." Basically just another take on "the pen is mightier than the sword." The 512, as in, 5 and a half, is my small dedication to Poe, a really great singer/songwriter/musician.
What's the story behind your u/n? :bounce:

4. Bareknuckled Liberals of America
I started that group in 1980 when I was in college, and Ronaldus Magnus was running for Imperator. I mean, President.

I had about five followers. We'd analyze political rhetoric and figure out ways to defeat it or turn it back on the Right.

Well, it was a start.

Kind of obvious. I got the idea for mine from your Great American, Patrick Buchanan.

Cheers!

as the second roadie. Humpin' amps, a Hammond B-3 and Leslie, loading and unloading and driving gig to gig while the players got stoned. The Mgr./sax player said one night, "Man, you just woofless" ,(worthless) and it just stuck. Anyone around Gainesville, FL remember "BlackLash"?

17. Welcome
I was muddling through the sign up process. I was feeling that bread and circuses was coming to describe big parts of American society, with the emphasis on circus. Achtung is German for "attention" or "warning".
I tried Achtung Bread and Circuses, why not, eh. It was too many characters so I edited it to what I am now stuck with.

22. Hey, cool handle
My nick was actually given to me by my old poli sci comparitive systems prof who first called me an idealist -- the class maoist -- after a week or two of that, I responded by saying that all sustainable systems mirrored the state motto of Missouri, 'let the welfare of the people be the supreme law' and every thing else was a revolution waiting for a moment to happen.

I said 'social democracy is the only realpolitik', and that is what he called me on and off the rest of the semester.

30. It's my actual nickname, that was given to me by blues diva,
E.C. Scott. She's a wonderful singer who records on the Blind Pig label.

Anyhow... She and her band were playing here in town a few years ago. I get a call from the owner of the venue the day before. He tells me "EC's sax-player is in the hospital after an auto accident, and I told her that I know a guy that can sit in with your band and make you not miss your regular guy." I thank him and say that I'll be there.

So, I start playing the gig. Luckily, I was already familiar with a lot of her music because I owned several of her CDs. I finish playing a loud wild solo, and EC introduces me to the crowd but forgets my name. She only remembers that it begins with a "J", so she improvises.

"Give some love up for Springfield's own..ummm...J.. BLUUUUE JAY on the horn!"

Most of my musician-friends were there and it sort of stuck.

39. Waverly Hills Hiker....good karma....pix & story....
...though I dont live there anymore....

Waverly Hills is this belt of hills south of Louisville, outriders of the Knobs....with great views over the surrounding countryside.

There is a golf course in these hills, and a lake, Waverly Lake, and two other lakes or ponds. Plenty of little hollows and ravines and ridgetops, cedar groves, old farmsites & wagon trails now gone back to forest, and an old abandoned sanitorium
http://whsmemorial.tripod.com/ that looks like a gothic castle.

I used to love hiking here when I lived in the area (within walking distance), so I used the name of the place in my handle to sort of honor it ...sort of as good mojo or karma, as the place always did have a sort of good vibe going during my many walks and hikes.

long ago on another political board I wanted the name Piper in reference to the saying "you can dance but you have to pay the piper", meaning the repugs will have to pay one day for their evildoings. The name Piper was already registered to someone else (who never posted by the way) so I just added two letters that are in the middle of my real name and came up with Piperay. When I registered here I was used to the name so I kept it. :-)

Blueshift means just the opposite. It means a celestial body is moving towards Earth, towards the blue end of the electromagnetic spectrum.

70. Two meanings...
A free-for-all is a brawl, which I thought the board might turn out to be (when I joined), but I also used it because it would be great to have a world that is free for all (of us).

Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 12:20 AM by SilasSoule
<-----------Silas Soule

Captian Silas S. Soule, A truly forgotten hero in U.S. history that my DU name is in honor of. As a Masachusetts abolitionist working with the Underground railroad, he orchestrated several rescue and breakout attempts including that of one John Brown. HE later became a Union officer and was sent West during the last years of the Civil war to fight the Indian Wars. There was a massacre of a Cheyenne village of mostly women and children at Sand Creek Colorado on November 29th 1864 lead by a bloodthirsty Colonel named Chivington, Captain Soule was under his command. Soule directed his men to stand down, hold their ground and to "not" participate in the blood letting, while carnage was all around them. People were shocked at the savagry used the U.S. Army at Sand Creek and in the aftermath of the massacre body parts were put on public display in Denver. An investigation ensued and Captain Soule was in forefront of giving testimony that what Chivingtion did was outright murder. Before the inquest ended he was shot and killed by one of Chivington's men. He was 34 years old. Some historians credit this event at Sand Creek for the shift in Indian policy from complete annihaltion of a people to a "containment in reservations" doctrine and thus attribute Soule with potentially saving countless of Native American lives.

85. Jimi Hendrix - "I Don't Live Today"
At one point in the midst of a psychadelic orgasm in this tune Jimi cries, "Ahhhhhh, There ain't no life nowhere!" which he utters in a strangely comforting way, like that's cool anyway and it doesn't really matter.
