What should I use to get burned rice off the bottom of a pot?

The options are borax, lye, TSP, wallpaper stripper, mineral oil, baking soda, vinegar, bleach, Comet-type stuff, and regular dish soap.

8. Yup.
That works, especially if you add some salt to the water. So does this: http://www.ehow.com/how_114388_treat-burned-pots.html

21. Exactly.
That works perfect. You can use a wooden spoon if you don't want to damage the surface.

4. No need for harsh chemicals. Just let it soak overnight.
Pour off the extra liquid and use a scraper or spatula to dislodge the gunk that is left.

16. Scrubber. Barkeeper's Friend.
Scrub off any chunkies with a Brillo if it'll take it, otherwise a plastic scrubber.
Follow up by applying BarKeeper's Friend as instructed on the can (this stuff comes in a can like Comet but it's far more effective without scratching the cookware. You make a paste of the powder and a little water and scrub in circles.

Rinse and repeat the BarKeepers as needed.

It takes some time but it will remove all of the burned-on crap -- been there, done that, won the science fair ribbon.

17. Cold water and let sit over night ...OR ..
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 08:03 PM by AsahinaKimi

At Walgreen's or similar places, I have found rice cookers for ten dollars. I love mine and use it a lot plus if I let it sit in cold water it will allow the rice to just float off. The rice cookers are designed to cook the rice on high and then go immediately to warm. You can let the rice sit in there for over an hour and it will not burn, nor stick very much.

18. KIm and Aggie from "How Clean is Your House"
suggested salt and lemon juice. I poured nearly half a can of morton's into my pot and made it into a paste with lemon juice and let it sit over night. I still needed to use elbow grease for the more stubborn parts - but I was please with the outcome. I had thought I was going to have to throw out the pot.

23. I let it sit with several changes of water and dish soap
Maybe 2-3 changes of HOT water and soap over the course of a couple of days. In most instances, the burned rice lifts off in a single layer, and very little scrubbing is required to clean the rest.

34. Baking soda soak is cheap, effective
While working in several Bay Area soup kitchens this was a daily problem. I constantly had a pot or two soaking with baking soda, this works, but don't expect instant results. It has the advantages of being real inexpensive and not so labor intensive. I had no time for endless scouring and could not use the stove when meals were being prepared. (2,500 hot meals served between 11:00 and 1:00)
Throwing a tantrum at the cook had little or no effect, I had to start watching the rice in self defense.
Don't even ask what a burned 30 gal. steam cauldron is like.....
The rice cookers I have seen left a large pot shaped lump if if you do not remove it immediately, by the way.
