67. I got to see them live last year
I know they are totally huge in Japan but when I saw them in the small club, they gave a performance with enough energy to fill a huge outdoor stadium . They seemed genuinely enthusiastic and not stuck up and had time for us little people when we got pictures and autographs

113. I couldn't imagine seeing a band anywhere but at a club.
More intimate, cheaper, and you almost always get to talk to the band if one so desires. In an arena you pay some exorbitant fee to sit half a mile away and if you try to talk to the bands a burly bouncer snaps your fibula. :)

12. This is rather interesting >>>
The lyrics tell the story of a man who looks up and whistles while he is walking so that his tears won't fall. The verses of the song describe him doing this through each season of the year.

The original Japanese title was considered too difficult for American audiences to remember and pronounce, therefore a well-known word that people would associate with Japan was used — sukiyaki, even though the word has nothing to do with the song. A Newsweek columnist noted that the re-titling was like issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stew."<2>

In 1989 the later slain singer Selena recorded "Sukiyaki" in her eponymous EMI album Selena.

In the UK, it was the first ever Japanese language song to enter the charts, under the American assumed title "Sukiyaki". However it only went to number 6 with no further chart entries.

The song was performed in English by the female R&B duo A Taste of Honey in 1981; the English version, which also told the story of a love gone wrong, was almost as big a hit as the original, reaching #3 on the Hot 100 and remaining on the Hot 100 chart for 24 weeks. "Sukiyaki" was brought back into the U.S. Top 10 once more by the R&B vocal group 4 P.M. (4 Positive Music) in 1994.

In 2000, solo violinist Diana Yukawa recorded Sukiyaki song on her bestselling debut album (known as Elegy in the UK and La Campanella in Japan). Diana also performed Sukiyaki various times on the mountainside where her father, Akihisa Yukawa, died in the Japan Airlines Flight 123 crash with Sakamoto.

The English lyrics of the version recorded by A Taste of Honey are not a translation of the original Japanese lyrics but a completely different set of lyrics set to the same basic melody. Probably the nearest translation, at least in feel, was recorded by US soul singer Jewel Akens, on ERA records, as "My First Lonely Night" which, although not a literal translation, tells a similar story. A lonely man walks through the night, after losing his love.

98. Some more bits of "Sukiyaki" trivia
I have heard that the name "Sukiyaki" was born when an American record producer heard it while eating sukiyaki at a Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles.

Also, the singer, Ryu Sakamoto, was one of the 520 victims who died in the JAL airplane crash in August 1985.

18. Natacha Atlas in Arabic
Yallah Chant

Natacha Atlas

“There will always be two identities living within me: Arabic and European. When I was very young, I tried to ignore the Arabic side, my father’s side, because I saw it as foreign. But something happened in my late teens. I was at a nightclub in Brussels and I heard Arabic music, and I knew then that there was something inside of me that I wanted to go back to. So I ended up going to the other extreme. But as you mature, you realize that you have both inside you. That’s how God made me. These days I dream in two languages, and not a day goes by when I don’t end up using Arabic”

:loveya:

Here's one of her sexiest songs, Kidda:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpgtILuOl68

Lyrics in translation:

O night
Oh Why, my love
My love, why
My Love why are you like that (cruel) when I love you so?

Why
My love, Why
My love, why are you like that, when I love you?
My love, why are you like that, when I love you?

Why?
I, I know that you love me
Why, oh the time that passes

My soul
Oh where is the justice, your honour the judge?
Oh there is no mercy at your hands
My torment, to you is nothing.

Oh why?
My love, why like that?
When I love you so?

You made me love you
Why, why, why
My master
Oh Why
Oh my love
One day you will face your fate and ask for mercy from my
inspiration
Oh my soul
I have mourned, mourned, mourned
There is no mercy at your hands
And my torment, to you is nothing.

I do know the word "habibi" but that's it. There are some belly dancers I know that will dance to her music, too.

What album is this from? I have her first (Diaspora) and her most recent (Mishmaoul) although I didn't care for the hiphop cuts on Mishmaoul. I'll have to buy the others sometime...

Thanks for that one! :D
It's good to see that at least one other person here knows about her

I will likely get all of her albums anyway.

I do have a couple of Transglobal Underground CDs. At the time I got them (from a public radio station where I volunteered) I was not aware of Atlas as I am now. She does vocals for many of the cuts. One is an EP (The "Chariots" Mixes) and the other is Psychic Karaoke. Great stuff! :D

77. I have one of their CDs. They are amazing.
This song is on that CD. I was told that they get their amazing sound from singing quarter-tones.

(In the cracks on the piano). :D

They were on The Tonight Show back years ago when Johnny Carson was host.
They did "Oh Susanna".

78. Hearing Bulgarians do Oh Susanna would have been something!
I never saw them in the USA, just over here. Of course, Germany is somewhat closer to Bulgaria. The hall was sold
out when they sang in Düsseldorf, with people from ten to 90 in the audience. I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that
they are known in America (at least by some people) They get their quarter tones from Turkish music, as the Turks
occupied Bulgaria for a couple of centuries. Not all their tunes use them, but some do, of course, and what passes
for harmony in Balkan music is considered dissonance to some Western ears.

85. Bonnie and Clyde
By Serge Gainsbourg, performed by Luna (Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips singing)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3o7LYyPgaA

Vous avez lu l'histoire
De Jesse James
Comment il vécu
Comment il est mort
Ça vous a plus hein
Vous en d'mandez encore
Et bien
Ecoutez l'histoire
De Bonnie and Clyde

Alors voilà
Clyde a une petite amie
Elle est belle et son prénom
C'est Bonnie
A eux deux ils forment
Le gang Barrow
Leurs noms
Bonnie Parker et Clyde Barrow

Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde

Moi lorsque j'ai connu Clyde
Autrefois
C'était un gars loyal
Honnête et droit
Il faut croire
Que c'est la société
Qui m'a définitivement abîmé

Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde

Qu'est-c' qu'on a pas écrit
Sur elle et moi
On prétend que nous tuons
De sang-froid
C'est pas drôl'
Mais on est bien obligé
De fair' tair'
Celui qui se met à gueuler

Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde

Chaqu'fois qu'un polic'man
Se fait buter
Qu'un garage ou qu'un' banque
Se fait braquer
Pour la polic'
Ça ne fait d'myster
C'est signé Clyde Barrow
Bonnie Parker

Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde

Maint'nant chaqu'fois
Qu'on essaie d'se ranger
De s'installer tranquill's
Dans un meublé
Dans les trois jours
Voilà le tac tac tac
Des mitaillett's
Qui revienn't à l'attaqu'

Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde

Un de ces quatr'
Nous tomberons ensemble
Moi j'm'n fous
C'est pour Bonnie que je tremble
Quelle importanc'
Qu'ils me fassent la peau
Moi Bonnie
Je tremble pour Clyde Barrow

Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde

D'tout'facon
Ils n'pouvaient plus s'en sortir
La seule solution
C'était mourir
Mais plus d'un les a suivis
En enfer
Quand sont morts
Barrow et Bonnie Parker

Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde
